I'm pretty new to Dust, and here are my thoughts on what it is like jumping into the game and playing a Heavy.
1. Everything costs more, in every department, for no obvious reason. - There are no militia guns or grenades for Heavies, and Heavy guns have higher skill point requirements. This is a huge turn off to someone just getting into the game, because you have neither the money nor the points to invest. Requiring weapon upgrades 5 just to even use a Forge gun was a huge pain in the ass. Once you finally get everything you begin to wonder why the extra hassles? It's not like the Heavy weapons necessarily feel more powerful than the light weapons, as compared to the noticeable difference between switching from a light to a sidearm.
2. Sidearms? - If using the HMG I never even needed to fit a sidearm, because I knew I'd either be engaging in close range combat, or not at all. When using the Forge Gun, though, the SMG always felt lacking in close range duels against people using ARs or Shotguns, so why not just save the CPU/PG and pray for direct body hits with the Forge Gun. You'd think that HEAVIES would be able to carry both their heavy weapon and a decent light weapon like the shotgun, or hell, why not just let them carry TWO heavy weapons, and the problem is immediately solved.
3. No equipment slot. EVER?!? - Another huge turnoff to me. Every other class gets to carry some type of equipment, most importantly a respawn beacon, but the Heavy cannot. So if I want to ensure that I'm in on the action at the point of my choosing, I have to switch to another armor type, deploy the beacon, die and switch back to Heavy, and hope that the other team hasn't found the beacon yet. I can understand that low level dropsuits might not have an equipment slot, but for there to not be one on even the highest level suits is another major disappointment.
To quote a response from a thread where someone was complaining of being killed on spawn.
Baal Roo wrote:If you don't have an uplink that you personally dropped on the field, and you spawn in without uplinks equipped, you're doing it wrong. So Heavies are ALWAYS doing it wrong. Awesome. You know that unused Sidearm slot? LET ME PUT THE EQUIPMENT IN THERE!
4. I feel pretty. - While the extra ~500 hp looks nice on paper, it still feels like I die from 1 second's worth of AR fire. This is probably solved later on, though, so it's only a minor annoyance.
Again, this is all from the perspective of someone with only a week's /played, so I'm sure that with the best dropsuits and prototype weapons Heavies feel completely different, but it just seems like the game goes out of its way to put roadblocks in your path as a new player trying to play one. After getting the SP to use the HMG, my only real complaint that I know won't be solved with more ISK, SP, or better play is that I'll never have an equipment slot to fill with a respawn beacon or remote explosives. |
