So with the arms race heating up for tankers and dropship pilots skills are an issue. And being if your a new guy that likes vehicle combat as well as infantry combat it can be confusing. Should i use all of my SP for this tank or a nice suit? If you spend it on your suit you can't have the tank and you end up dying by said tank. It also works the other way so where is the middle ground? How can I have my cake and eat it? This is where alt switching comes in and alts in general.
CCP realized this problem and offered a very robust solution: alternate character slots. So now you can have your infantry guy and your vehicle guy. But there is still a problem isn't there? Yes you can't train them both at the same time with the way passive SP works but active SP works all the time. Alt switching is a compromise so that you can be viable in the ground game and vehicle warfare. It works like this: on your infantry guy take off the passive SP and put it to your vehicle guy for 1 or more cap cycles your choice(a cap cycle is 7 days). Once that is done play through the cap cycle on your non-passive boosted infantry toon and in the next week switch to your vehicle guy and give your infantry guy the passive SP. Slowly but surely you'll have the the perfect synergy of infantry and vehicle viability.
Note: the drawback is minimal but still should be noted you can't get as much SP on one toon as opposed to having passive SP and playing on that toon per week. I crunched the numbers and its something like 5k less. But if you do have aur you can use active boosters to bring that closer to 3k SP.

Also a great idea for the beta as it provides the option to test out several different skill builds at the same time. :)

I like the concept but overall I note it as something as a failure.
Passive SP gains 1000 per hour, 168,000 per week.
Active gain is 500k max per week.
This is all without boosters.
While I play my alt once my main gets below 1k per battle or when I'm just feeling like it, I use her as a testing ground for low level skills of scout/assault infiltration abilities. My 3rd alt is used for heavy/AV tests.
While you CAN spread yourself out across 2 characters with a lot of work you could be significantly better off just leaving passive SP on your main character to top out that one character's skills as easily as possible.
I will make a qualifying statement. Within the first 2-3mil SP, I can understand spreading yourself out, but eventually, at some point, you'll be working a whole week, if not longer, to get ONE skill... At that point the 668k is a HUGE boon compared to just 500k or whatever you can gain actively without passive also active.
While I sit on 5mil on my main (passive active all the time), and 2mil on my alt... I'm comfortable with that as she's very, VERY focused while my main has skills all over the place. My 3rd is even more focused than my ALT as he ONLY has suit and weapon skills for heavy AV just to test their battlefield capacity. |

Why would you want to train core skills on multiple characters? I will be sticking to one character and adding specialities as my interests change or I start maxing out areas.

Just curious why not just set up another email account and get three new characters one of which will also have passive sp
Now you have your cake and can eat it too. |
