Got the week off school and dropships are more affordable than ever. Couple this with the recent nerf to their offensive power and it's the perfect time to try out some of my ideas for using dropships as transport.
BUT I can't do it alone! I need friendlies to act as guinea pigs as I attempt to work out ways to safely hotdrop friendlies into danger or rapidly extract them therefrom.
I'm probably going to be on all day, so if this sounds like something you'd be interested in send me a message. |

Not for me, but have a friendly bump to keep this around... Hopefully it gets enough responses to help you out in your testing. |

I'm game- I've been even thinking of doing some experimenting of my own, but that mostly involves hybrid turrets. |

Tried it, didn't work.
Got shot down Immediately on the First Attempt. Picked up some blue dots and transported them across the map on the second attempt. They stayed in the turrets FIRING BLASTERS at a CRU. Eventually they got out and began to run across the map (away from this unhacked CRU). Got hit by swarms and sent into a building a few moments after that.
thought "lol **** dat", went 2/2 that match. Next match I went 21/1 because I decided blueberries are morons and I should just go solo everything without them. Went much better. |

I don't know what made you think this would ever work with randoms. Of course that failed!
What I did was use some guys from ROFL chat. I had limited success with:
1. dropping troops off at a desired location. I actually landed a guy on a CRU once. With a bit more practice I should be able to improve my consistency.
2. Extracting troops. We never tried an actual hot extraction (they kept dying before I could get to them), but we were able to simulate them in the spawn area.
Outlook thus far: It's do-able, but it's not going to be easy. It involves actual piloting, not the lap-racing I've been relegated to most of this build. It's going to require solid understanding of the map you're on to know what approach paths are safe and feasible for pickup.
It's also worth noting that despite our success with rapid insertion we had minimal combat success. I feel like part of that is because we only got about three games in before connection issues split us up and in two of those games our team was completely red-lined.
What I feel would make this successful: corp battles. One or two dropships on a sixteen man team all on comms would, I think, make for a huge force multiplier. This would have advantages such as:
1. More than two people to drop. I was working with a three-man squad, and even dropped in the perfect place there's only so much you can do with two guys in starter assault suits.
2. Scouts watching your back. When I'm dropping I can't stop and support the people I just dropped because for all I know there's two volleys of swarms following me. Having someone in the hills who can say "Skies are all yours, drop those guys and stay so someone can man the door guns", not to mention to keep forge gunners under control would be insanely helpful.
3. No randoms means I can use an mCRU. I haven't decided yet if it would actually be worth sacrificing as much eHP as it would require, but I can definitely see how it might be helpful.
4. Someone might could actually use my door guns! |

:( I had forgotten how idiotic blueberries were.. I figured they might actually jump out after they found I had blasters on the ship.. Am sorry, won't happen again.
I'd do it with my corp but when I said "Hey guys, do you wanna see if using a Dropship as a transport actually works?" I got laughed at, a lot.. |

Yeah, I had my invite up in chat for about an hour before anyone took me up on it. Clearly what we need to do it get us pilots together and practice, then we can take it to our respective corps and show them something that works, rather than something we hope might eventually work!
Where's Skihids? We need to get him in on this. |

I have another idea to suggest: how about carrying around 4 shotgunners? If you can drop them into CQC radius, then extract them after they cleared everything out, then dropships will be superdupergodmode. It would be so effective against infantry that you might be able to fit the dropship with railguns, allowing you to take out vehicles. |
