One weapon that would be very useful against strongholds, tanks, and snipers..... Mortars would be a great addition to the current set of weapons in DUST 514.Not only do Mortars provide support damage from afar but could also provide smoke as cover for units crossing a dangerous battlefield. Please add this weapon to DUST 514. Would also like to hear a DEV'S opinion on adding a Mortar weapon to DUST 514. |

Ah, I remember a thread like this before. Might as well re-iterate my ideas for racial-specific weapons anyway: For starters, any "bombardment" hand-weapon like mortars should get an accuracy boost if a separate soldier uses a laser designator to mark the target. Otherwise you'll bombard a general area based on skills alone.
>Minmatar: Standard mortar. This can be a bombardment variant of the existing Mass Driver, there have been a few suggestions to that end already.
>Gallente: Kamikaze Drones. This bombardment device trades damage for the ability to auto-seek targets based on scan radius. Lock-ons are overriden by the laser designator.
>Caldari: Micro-Ballistic-Missile pack. Similar trajectory as a mortar, but slower and more accurate. Hitting R1 after launch causes the missile to turbo-boost directly at the target area with a loss of accuracy.
>Amarr: Solar Multifrequency Array. A saucer-shaped suite of magnetic lenses that flies over the target, then focuses the radiation of the system's star into a semi-natural laser of immense power (Ever used the C-finder in Fallout: New Vegas?). If the target area's ground was sand, the area is literally turned to glass! |

I would have liked this idea except for the fact that we have precision strikes and mass launchers that already mimic that role. I don't see mortars as a fun gameplay addition (on both the firing and receiving end), but that's just my opinion. |

Would be fine if the Scout (much less so Sniper) builds had the ability to call in rounds and to get steel on steel contact. Designators (laser or otherwise) would be a must for these. Blind firing mortors just should not be done. This would require teamwork... Not sure how well it would go over in most pub matches though... Probably get a lot of QQ about how op'ed they are...
Oh yeah, different types of rounds would be needed as well. Anti-personnel, anti-vehicle mainly, With the NEED to switch between to be truly usefull and perhaps not get labeled op'ed from inception.
Maybe it's just me though... |

I wouldn't mind a piece of deploy-able equipment that fires explosive rounds similar to the Mass driver at a set trajectory with a limited number of rounds. Could be fun for diversions and epic hallway control. :) |

I think the Mass Driver is as close as we need to an infantry-based mortar weapon.
Anything else will be fine to happen via artillery turrets.
Not saying it's a terrible idea, it might be fun if CCP do it anyway. I just don't think it'll be needed. |

Mass drivers are too close range to fill the role in my opinion. I think there should be a new mas driver variant with mortar functionality, or some new kind of mortar weapon. Here is my idea on how to expand the mass driver to for mortar roles.
https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=41349&find=unread
KAGEHOSHI Horned Wolf wrote:[CURRENT STATE OF THE MASS DRIVER] Right now the mass driver basically functions as just a grenade launcher that mainly works in close range because targeting long ranges can be very difficult, but I think that is a waste since the grenades have the potential to reach much greater distances than they are typically used in. There are great possible applications for this weapon that can greatly improve its usefulness to the team, and make it more versatile to allow different playstyles.
[PROPOSED NEW "MORTAR" FUNCTIONS]
Aiming down sight should be removed, and replaced by some sort of targeting system for mortar-style artillery fire for long range support.
Targeting option 1: That targeting system can be an augmented reality launch arc that shows an estimate of where the mass driver grenades will land; firing the mass driver should be impossible when using the targeting arc terminating at close to mid range to prevent abuse in close to mid range.
Targeting option 2: A large 3D hologram projects out from the player's arm screen (the one that shows up when hacking), or as augmented reality 3D map taking up half of the dropsuit's vision (and making the user vulnerable as a tradeoff). This should show the currently spotted red dots while the player holds the mass driver with the other hand, and the hologram would show approximately where the mass driver grenades will land if fired with a marker. Option is more favorable since obstructions could block the line of sight to enemies when using the arc.
While in the "artillery mode", the mass driver should fire all rounds in the magazine at once as a scattering cluster near the spot highlighted by the targeting system. This would help cover a wide area of effect (useful for groups, and moving targets), but would have the drawback of having to reload with every shot.
[IMPLEMENTATION] Option 1: All mass drivers could get this secondary function. Option 2: A new "artillery" variant of the assault rifle could be added for these long range functions. Such a variant could have low splash damage, but have a higher splash radius to make up for innacuracy, and target movement.
[WHY THIS WOULD BE GOOD] Makes the mass driver useful beyond just being a "noob tube" by offering a new support role.
Great for supporting allies.
More long range combat variety.
It would depend on teamwork since only spotted enemies would appear in the targeting system, so the user will have to rely on teammates to spot enemies to target.
[WHY ITS NOT OVERPOWERED] It would only be useful for dealing with long range large groups as support fire since grenades travel slow, and targets tend to be mobile making it unlikely to get kills.
The targeting would be imperfect, so a chance of landing hits on someone consistently would be low (especially direct hits).
TL;DR: Its not much, just read. |

Honestly, other than targeting issues (which I've seen a couple of players working around), the Mass Driver IS a functional artillery weapon. If you're good at judging arc and range, and if you're good at reading the minimap, I've seen a few players use Mass Drivers for mid- to long-range indirect fire.
When rigging comes out, an augmented reality sight that traces the firing arc and marks the blast area - EVEN when it's going to land behind cover would be an awesome addition - that way you could use the blast in conjunction with a friendly spotter to line up shots on enemies behind cover and at longer ranges than normal. |

@KAGEHOSHI: I like your MD variant. I should mention that artillery rounds, especially variable-speed, can be made to impact the target area at the same time with the proper firerate and angle adjustments. Maybe you could have the targeting system interlink with the dropsuit servos to make that possible? It would still be a "scattered" cluster with the same total damage, the main difference is that it hits as a single strike - so the first round doesn't give the enemy enough warning to escape! Of course, the shooter is stuck in one place while the gun CPU is controlling the suit's aim... |

I really hope we get cool attachments like that, and not just regular boring old FPS attachments. |

I think it might be cool for a heavy weapon, and we're going to need more AV soon so that would be a great functional role. Smoke screens would also be great in skirmish matches, especially when combined with uplinks. |

[REQUEST] Mortar-like weapons Update: We have a design that will give the Mass Driver a secondary fire mode that is very similar to a mortar and other designs for "area of effect" weapons as well. For now we are focusing on imporving existing weapons first. |
