It's the tech level i think. Ask an EVE player, would give you a good answer probably. :) |

It's just the general indicator of how 'strong' an item is. The higher the meta level the better. They are usually defined as sub levels between tech 1 and tech 2 but that has changed and now all items have their own meta level. |

What Musta said ^^
Tech levels used to be just 1 and 2 ... 2 was a vastly superior item/ship that needed much higher skill requirements. We don't have ANY tech 2 items in DUST yet, but I believe they are planned. Eve also more recently has some Tech 3 ships, but only cruisers so far, again I believe more are coming Soon TM.
Meta levels give you an indication of which of the different tech 1 items are slightly better than another. There's usually only one tech 2 version of each module in Eve, but again if there were more, the meta level would indicate which was an improved version. |

You're welcome ... It's a far from perfect system ... Reason being the Eve economy and Pilots dictate which are better and it's only after Pilots find out which item has the perfect fitting requirements to bonus ratio that fits on their ship and gives the best results, that the boom in demand causes an inflation in price.
My point is ... of the Tech 1 items ... a meta 3 might be more popular and cost more than a meta 5 item just because it's got that perfect balance that allows a popular fitting on a very popular ship.
Eve fittings are vastly more complex than DUST fittings, certainly so far, the fact you have much more choice in everything and up to 8 weapon slots to fill, often with 4 or 5 highs and lows and a capacitor to figure into it all. Slots are slightly different though ... I say weapon slot but weapons fit in High slots and you have medium and low slots for modules, but I didn't want to confuse too much straight away.
Give the trial a go if you have a PC, it's a good game if you have a bit of patience to research and understand what's going on. |

Meta level is anywhere between 1 and 9 on the "stats" page in the weapon info. You press triangle to view an item's stats when selecting that item.
For instance, militia AR is meta 1, standard AR is meta 2, tactical and breach are meta 3, AUR variant of advanced meta 4, advanced meta 5, advanced tactical and breach meta 6, AUR variant of proto meta 7, proto meta 8, proto tactical and breach meta 9.
It's just a good comparison of weapons vs dropsuits vs equipment vs modules. Everything has a meta level, but some modules don't have as many variants as weapons do, so you can easily compare two items to see which one is more powerful/useful at a glance. Of course, it might not always be the best comparison, but oh well. |

The only real difference between EVE and Dust in this respect is that we don't currently have segregated Tech levels for assets. We might be seeing something similar to that, though, with the other suit classes visible on Buckingham, like Shock and Spec-Ops suits for example, which look like they're more aimed at specialization than our current suits, specialization being the main focus of Tech-II in EVE. |
