I don't know if this is good or bad. Does anyone outside the US even care?
I ask because the last election of US leadership actually had a polarizing effect on countries aside from my own. This election has much less of an all around abrasive feel to it, in spite of the crappy ads presented by both sides. |

This was one of the most sharply divided election years in recent memory. People's opinions have usually been tainted to some degree by emotion and media bias (do not lie about that - the only major outlets without a party slant are outside of the US, if they exist at all).
What I do know is that, should things go further south politically, it will only be because people had refused to work together. There will be no single person or group to blame.
Was that part of our issues in the recent past? Definitely.
Was it the only factor? Heck no, but that's also not the point.
Almost any policy can work if the people and government allow it to - the ethics are irrelevant. Just look at the other countries, and history, for evidence of that. Hell, look at EVE and the governments there!
I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Stop fighting with each other! The colors of the United States are Red AND White AND Blue! Things aren't going to get any better until you realize that and help your fellow countrymen instead of insulting them! |

Wrong. I can think of several that are more sharply divided than what I saw.
1. 1844 Election: Joseph Smith (the first ever Mormon) was shot and killed by a group of anti-Mormons who didn't want him to win the presidential election. This was at a time in America's history (very dark time) in which Mormonism was hated so much that a mayor of one city issued an executive order to exterminate all Mormons. Times were that bad back then. I'm glad this is no longer happening.
2. 2000 Election: We all know about the Florida recount and how George W. Bush stole the election from Al Gore. It was the one election year that revealed how much of a mess our ballot-counting system was.
3. 2008 Election: Obama was labeled a terrorist, his original long-form certificate held only by the state department in Hawaii was questioned, people thought he was born in Kenya, John McCain and Hillary Clinton kept throwing kitchen sinks, and voters were threatening to leave the country or create a deep partisan divide if things don't go their way.
4. 2012 Election: Nothing much, surprisingly. The only complaint people had was that Florida took too long to count votes because too many people came out to vote and were waiting in line until right before the sun showed up the next day. Some people had to leave and not vote because they had important things to do or they were too exhausted to continue waiting. It didn't matter anyways because all the other states finished by then and Obama was already the clear winner even if Romney won Florida. |

@maken - I know that there was a significant amount of political-level division in other times including the "hanging chads" of 2000, but what I meant by that line was that this election had the most widespread division of the people themselves since the 1840s-60s, which as we all know didn't end well at all.
That isn't good, especially in the economy of today. My message was that we need to take a good look at ourselves, realize that this hatred of each other will go nowhere, and work together as we should have been for the past 12 years! |
