About half of the new dust players I speak with have serious problems getting voice comms activated. The process is complex, going to settings and then turning push to talk off. There are some indicators, but generally for a large percentage of people they will quit thinking their mics dont work. For a game that people do not have to invest in initially they may just quit out and say its not worth it, because they cant even get their mics working. My suggestion is just start with voice activated and push to talk off. That way people can start with the easy on option, and turn it off it they want to. This will be much easier for many people, it will make my life easier as a recruitment office, and generally I really think it will help the game retain players in the future. |

Very true. This has been brought up many times before, but CCP seems to ignore it. |

Agreed.
I played for 3 weeks before I figured out how to turn on voice. I thought that you HAD to buy the UVT which was only available via AUR. I bought the merc pack just to get my voice activated. Pissed I was when I bought the pack, bought the UVT and still no voice.
The Chat is unhelpful. Some troll in there told me I had to by the merc pack.

Well in order to chat in Local or player-made chats you have to have Aurum to buy a Universal Voice Transmitter. The best bang for your buck is buying the merc pack so he wasn't entirely wrong.
However, Corp and Squad chat don't need UVTs and you can chat without needing to buy Aurum.
Back to OP, yes I do believe we need slightly easier voice options... maybe Push-to-Talk off by default? |

Local clearly states that there is no Voice in that channel.
and PTT is a D-pad button, I could be ok with that defaulted on, and it's easier to turn off then the actual voice option.
Voice Option should be default on definitely.
Many people wont look right at settings when they load up the game the first time to try out the battles.

CCP, voice chat should be on as standard. If people don't like it, they'll hunt the option down to turn it off.
As it stands, like people above mentioned, people just don't realise half the time it's even in game let alone use it. Just leave push to talk off and enable chat as a default, then let people decide if they want it on or not.
Comms are imperative to this game if you want to work as a successful squad imo. |

Completely agree here. This game requires communication and to have it off by default is just wrong.
Having it on by default will at least allow those who don't want it on to be able to have a conversation with others to help explain how to turn it off. Do that make sense? Ya I think so. It's early |

Completely agree that comms are imperative, and people seem to start thinking the game has no voice after a while with voice off and them unable to figure out how to turn them on. That just builds upon the problem, as people eventually give up thinking its their mic or the game doesnt have voice comms. |

As a usual tutor for some amount of new players, I totally agree. Guiding someone in voice is so much better. Besides, chat still remains as an alternate option.

Before PTT was implemented, voice defaulted to off.
Even then, I was saying it should default to on. And even then, I was telling people who wanted PTT that it needed to default to PTT off.

And it should default to team chat in game. I usually play one round before i remember to switch it out of the default squad. |

Ok right off the bat I would like to totally agree with OP. Voice should be default on and PTT default off.
Having said that WTF is wrong with people! Do you really jump into a game, especially one as convoluted as this one, and not READ anything?
I mean what FPS player doeesnt go into settings and look at them? See what each button does, what sensativity is at, if it is inverted, if VOICE is on, and any other options like aim assist.
How does a gamer go into a new game and doesn't try to figure things out from the title screen and just jumps into the game wanting everything spoon feed to them?
This really isn't a big deal its the sad fact that majority of people or to lazy or to dumb to figure these things out.

Agreed. I'm as technologically re-tarded as they come and too old to learn many new tricks. I figured this out on the first console I've owned since the 1980's. It was an extra and unexpected step to have to back out of game to configure the PS to accept a simple USB mic, but whatever. If I can waddle through this problem with an interface I've never used and a controller I've never held in a matter of minutes, then anyone should be able to. I rack it up to either laziness or disinterest in getting on comms. New Eden is pretty good at spitting out the lazy or monumentally dumb.. ta hell with em. Call it the first line of natural selection.
I do agree that the PTT should be default off. That button is nothing but trouble.
