Pick your fights. Don't head to any red dot you see. There's a reason you can view a suits stat's from a long distance. I've recently started doing this and had amazing results.
See a Heavy? Don't go for it. Wait for a teammate to show up, or get behind it and sneak up to it.
See a Prototype Assault running at you? Run faster. Get to the nearest teammates. |

I was going to the top of a tall building in Line Harvestor to snipe Vehicles with my forge gun. Well, I have 800+ Armor and this Assault noob just by himself, sneaks to melee distance behind me, and starts attacking me. Well I pull out my Toxin SMG and waste him. Moral of the story, don't attack a Heavy with 800 armor in close range, bad Idea. (Had 500 Armor left, bah ha ha ha ha ha! I'm am so going to go HMG when I max out Forge Gun...) |

+1 for common sense.
Granted I will admit fault myself because i've had times where I would just run into people head on. I don't always think before I act, but when I do, it is as you say Icy. |

Choosing your battles is the key to winning in Dust, you are correct.
This also goes beyond specific post spawn engagements, this includes choosing what to spawn in (i.e. squad composition) and what to re-spawn in (using loadouts that counter what you're opposition is fielding). The unofficial motto of New Eden is Adapt or Die, learn it, use it, live it. Or die without it.
Also get over the idea that there is, or even should be, any build/fit/loadout/dropsuit/vehicle that can solo all comers. There is not, and there should not be. No dust merc is Rambo or Solid Snake if you're trying to be you should be dieing. (And those dropships you see? Those HAVs? They usually run with 2-3 mercs per vehicle, so expect to require 3 mercs with AV to counter them).
Or you can ignore my advice and die a whole lot. In which case I'll be the LogiBro sprinting through fire to try and revive you (after all it's one of the only ways I can make War Points this build ).

I commend you for your smart and constructive post.
But the guys are right, all you need to do is call in a drop ship, find a gunner, and win. |
