Ok so, Ive been playing Dust on and off for about a month and a half now. This is the longest time I have played an online FPS since Halo 2, and I know I suck at FPS games in general, but the balancing seems completely screwed to me.
Here's my gripe:
I'm running around in militia gear because A) I dont have the SP for anything else, and B) I dont have the ISK for anything else. Now that in itself isnt a problem, but then you add in a performance based reward system .
It seems to me that those players with High SP skill fatser and get more ISK (duh) solely because they have such an enormous advantage over those players with much less SP.
Every round at least half a dozen times I come across a high SP player and there is nothing i can do. i.e. I'm in a militia sniper suit, and sniping around crappily, I unload two good shots into another player wearing an assault suit, it doesnt kill him, then he turns around and unloads two 3-round bursts into me and kills me outright, from a huge distance away. Doesnt seem fair. Same round, militia assault, I unload an ENTIRE clip into another assault i caught off guard , he doesnt die, then while im reloading, he fires one quick burst and im dead.
This pattern repeats over and over and over, and seems to be all that happens, combine that with some serious issues with framerate chokes and lag spikes (which is BS because i have a 25mb down and 2.1mb up with 3-7ms ping, and yes ive tested this many times, im a network tech) and most matches I'm seething with frustration. All i can do is be cannon fodder and hope I get a few lucky kills, coming out of every match with under 17k SP and just enough ISK to replace my losses if I'm lucky.
All this creates very unbalanced gameplay, and personally I would like to see matchmaking by SP brackets, or some other solution.
Anyway, I would love some insight into this issue, is this the way the game was meant to be or is it just a temporary thing while the kinks get worked out, and have any of you guys experienced the same frustration as I, or do I just suck that badly? |

- They're bringing sp based matchups.
- Part of it is level of skill.
You have 3 rounds in a militia sniper rifle & ample time to put all 3 into your target. If you're getting 2 before he turns around & kills you then either your hidey hole was too close, or you need to shoot faster.
The initial SP & isk provided is enough to get a near prototype weapon in any class if you're going straight into offensive capability. Choosing the skills & equipment you field is part of the game too.

1) Militia gear isn't that bad, it's honestly not. I've almost burned through my merc pack AUR trying other things and 90% I'm running a default militia load out. :) I still get the job done.
2) Head shot! Be a sniper. Think like a sniper. Eat like a sniper. Make love like a sniper! Head shot them and they'll drop in 1! The longest head shot I've landed was at 445m and I have my LH Sharpshooter at lvl 3. Not sure if that matters or not. But it feels like I can hit anyone anywhere on the map with a headshot, no lie.
3) How do you know if they're a high sp player? Sounds to me you're blaming the lag, or your inability to aim, or get the jump on the person because you think they have high sp? I wouldn't lean on that crux if I were you. It'll only make this game less fun.
4) This is a beta!!!! Should it run smooth for better testing? Yeah, you...me...the entire beta community want's it that way. But sadly, it's not and that is a major frustration we're all dealing with, not just you.
You have to take this for what it is...testing in a broken environment. Will it get better? We'd have to hope so, because a Free to Play game cannot have kitten performance if they want to keep people around. Follow?
Take time to read all the skills, see what they do, how they affect your character and think about how you play and what you want to accomplish. Then make a character....test it out. Delete it, and make another, and another until you find a good starting point based on the avail SP and what you want to do.
It's what I've been doing. READ as much of these forums as you can, look for constructive posts, laugh at the morons on here and then take what you read and try to apply it in game.
If you're seeing posts from the following corps...it's a good bet it's 99.9% accurate: (in no particular order)
Imperfects Zion Tritan Industries STB Southern French Anonymous Killers Kill'em Quick
These corps have the players with knowledge, game time and have logged serious hours in EVE and FPS'ers in general.
EDIT: If I were you search for posts from TEXAS H!TM4N ...he's a very good sniper in game and I'm sure he's willing to impart wisdom upon others if asked nicely. And when you have Texas in your name, you dam well know he's good! |

My suggestion would be get up close to somebody and use a militia shotgun. Its a good combo if you pair that up with your starter LAV, drive up close, bail out and put some rounds into that guy. Chances are high that you can kill people who have full proto gear with it. |

In this case I know he was a high SP player because of the gun he was using when the kill was posted. And honestly I don't have an issue with the fact that a short burst from a high level weapon killed me, where i take issue is with he fact that i unloaded an entire clip on a stationary target and he didn't die and he wasn't a heavy.

Yeah, the fact that Dust is still in beta is the only reason why I've been so forgiving and stuck with it for as long as i have. As for the issues with frame-rate and lag, the frame-rate I can forgive because it takes a lot of work and is extreamly difficult to streamline a program as complex as Dust. The lag, however; IMO is unforgivable. CCP has the right gear and resources that lag should be a non-issue. |

Don't forget you get "salvage" at the end of each match, or the opportunity to find something.
So if you beef up your skills high enough, you will be able to use salvaged equipment of that level and there are items you find that cannot be purchased on the marketplace.
So again, keep playing, keep finding crap, there's items I have that I can't even use because I don't have the skill tree for it....
Word is we'll be able to sell that or donate it to the corp later on. |

I use BPO 99% of the time, pretty much all randoms, and I only pull out the better fits when I'm running a corp match. On top of that, my fiancee just started playing a couple weeks ago and she's at about 1.7mil now and this is also her first FPS, so I feel like I can weigh in on this one.
Try different things. a dark cloud mentioned that you should try shotguns, I can definitely attest to their effectiveness. The other day I set up a heavy fit and a logi fit for my fiancee and she's been trying both and it turns out that she likes both. Sniping is both the easiest thing and the hardest thing to do in this game. Do what you think is fun, but if what you think would be fun is actually causing you frustration then try something else. |

I suggest change you tactics. If you cannot beat them head on then try to out flank, out maneuver, and out plan you opponent. Dust has higher time to kill (TTK) than other FPS's meaning getting the drop and having better reflexes than your opponent does not mean a guaranteed kill. Yes you start with the advantage when you are shooting someone in the back but high TTK gives you opponent the chance to respond and if they do any of the above mentioned things better than you, your dead.
I think other FPS's has conditioned us to accept that this should get the kill but you need to approach Dust with a different mind set:
Out Flank: circle and approach your enemy from the side/back to start with the upper hand (sounds like you are doing this already!)
Out Maneuver: Use either the speed advantage of your suit if you have it or the surrounding environment to give you cover and better firing position
Out Plan: Never engage an opponent unless you have the upper hand and a plan for when they return fire.
E.g. While approaching objective A from the rear a heavy spawns right in front of you! Lucky for you your team is capping objective B and the heavy starts running in that direction without noticing you behind him. You have circled around to cap an objective. You have out flanked you opponent.
Next you wait on top of a well protected hill while he runs toward B (still oblivious to your presence) across open ground. With solid cover to your right and also having the option of dropping back down from your higher position you have out maneuvered you opponent.
But its a heavy and you cannot possible kill it in with one clip of your Militia rifle! Thanks Okay because before opening fire you throw a Militia grenade just behind the heavy and start moving into the cover on your right while emptying your clip. You take out mot of his shield but halfway through the clip he is returning fire with a HMG. You move right into cover and back down the hill while switching to your side arm.
The grenade goes off taking the rest of his shield and the majority of his Armour. He is not fazed as he got in a few good hits and took your shield down to zero. He saw you move into cover on the right so he has his cross hairs fixed in that position waiting for you to come back out knowing he will chew through your Armour before you get a shot off.
But instead from behind the hill you pop up from the LEFT and start firing with your side arm and before he can get his cross hairs on you he is dead. You have out planned you opponent.
All this happens in the space of 3 seconds so easier said than done but practice makes perfect ; ) |

I believe that saying you're cannon fodder under 1 million SP is a complete exaggeration. Last week I made a new character to skill into dropships. The only infantry based skills that I bought were Weaponry up to level 4 and Assault Rifle Operation to level 1. I had more than enough skill points at the start to do this without earning any more.
So far I've found myself doing surprisingly well exclusively using the Assault Frontline starter kit. The only changes I've made to it are adding the base assault rifle (same power as militia but 60 rounds per clip), a militia armour repairer and a militia nanohive. That's it, I've not even tried setting up any other loadouts.
I've managed to top the leaderboards a few times with something in the region of 15 kills and 1 or 2 deaths. I spend quite a bit of time playing on my own as well and I've been mainly teaming up with my corp members just when I plan to bring a dropship out. I have still had bad games as well, but this is mostly when there are a lot of corp members working together on the other team and I have to face against GEKs and Duvolles. But at least I'm doing a lot more ISK damage to them than they're doing to me. Overall my KD ratio is around 2.4, so skill far more important than the amount of SP you've spent and what gear you're using. |

I'd say when you're new... It's a lot tougher with low SP/gear, but not impossible. Depends on your skill level, and the level of those around you.
Obviously you're at a big disadvantage if you're in a militia fit, with little SP... going against somebody with 4mil SP, and a proto/complex fit. Most of the time, you'll lose that fight, unless your FPS skill is MUCH higher than theirs.
HOWEVER, if the opponent is using standard, or even advanced gear, you've got a shot. |
