This is more for the users, as CCP definitely can't provide everyone with SSDs, but it's a good thing to do for those who do have one.
So I don't know how many people will find this useful, but I've replaced my hard drive with an SSD (I did a backup to external, and then a restore) and I noticed that the loading stutter during levels almost completely went away (and what is there, has been reduced to a barely noticeable flitter as compated to a whole second from before).
Basically, from what I can tell, the game loads textures 'on-the-fly', and if you have a slow HDD, like the ones in the fat PS3s, the hard drive is a huge bottleneck as it has to access that resource while handicapped with crappy seek/read times.
I used a really budget Kingston 128GB V200 SSD, as the PS3 itself can't use the SATA3 (6Gbps) speeds anyways, and it's cheap as sin.
So yes, for those that are getting the really annoying stuttering, especially during firefights, give an SSD a try. It may save your hide next time.
*** EDIT ***
I experimented a bit more, and I found you can reduce it even further at the beginning of the match if you zoom all the way in and force these kind of texture loads to start early. |

Nice write up...
But I'll keep the HDD..otherwise I'll lose an excuse for my poor playing at times ... lol ;) |

I don't think the PS3 has any TRIM capabilities, so I wonder if the SSD performance will start degrading over time.
SSD's are great though, put an Intel 120GB in my aging PC a little over a year ago, and the difference was night and day. One of the first major differences I noticed was upon starting up the PC and loading windows. I have XP, so you all remember that little loading bar that moves from left to right as Windows loaded? Prior to my SSD, that little bar would reach the end and start over again something like 12-14 times before going to the logon screen. With my SSD, it doesn't even reach the end once before it boots to logon. Aside from that, everything is very snappy and fast. When I log in it only takes like ~5 seconds to go from 100% CPU usage to 0%, and I have a lot of heavy security programs that load on startup too. Old HDD would take at least a minuet or two.
I can only imagine how an SSD would perform in a PC that is actually built for performance! |

I know Intel have TRIM capabilities on some of their SSD drives so they would be a option. I'm seriously thinking of upgrading my PS3 with a SSD, it's just a case of waiting for the money to free up. The good thing is that the longer I wait the more gigs I'll get for my money |

Correct me if I'm wrong sir...but I thought I heard somewhere that the next gen consoles will have SSD's.........?
(which is why I'll just wait another year for the PS4 ....a year I hope...) |

Welcome to the cool kid club .
Also, TRIM was a solution for a flaw in 1st gen controllers. For any modern SSD it is completely unnecessary. In fact, I would heavily avoid any SSD that advertises it as a main feature. |

Until I can get a 500GB one for under -ú50, this is not a solution for me. |

Yeah, some of the older SSD's had it built in, but it seems those quickly went away. Probably because most modern OS's these days have it already, so it isn't needed (Windows 7, for example). Although XP doesn't have TRIM, so with an Intel drive, and some other manufacturers, they have software that does a TRIM-like feature for legacy systems.
Still not sure if the PS3 has any TRIM capabilities, and pretty sure without it the drive will take a performance hit, as the PS3 will have to erase each cell before writing to it (if the cell had previously been written to and is marked for deletion). |
