I just joined the beta, before I joined I thought the lack of public information was due to the beta going on and the information only being release to testers. Well now I'm here and can see there is next to no information or discussion about this game here either. Devposts are far between and quite low on information, no discussions about game mechanics at all. Devs only seem to be discussing purely technical issues.
We are today supposedly less then a quarter from release of DUST514, but the build we are testing is so far from a release build it's hard to even describe. Even worse there is absolutely no information about when the next build will be up or what it would contain.
At this moment if a build with most or all release features where to be release to testers, it would be a tall order to do balancing and stability work and have a real solid release before the end of the year. Not to mention if any game mechanic would need some actual reworking.
So except for training my dreadful console/FPS skills I have a hard time seeing the point of this beta.
I hope there is a real beta going on behind the curtains somewhere because if this is it I see a very rocky road ahead. |

U arent going to find too many players that will argue ur view about the work still to be done on the game. But Codex is just one of multiple builds of the game. If u want to know what has changed, read the patch notes. Devs frequently post details of planned hotfixes which are applied pretty much every week. Its not really the best time of day to see a lot of forum activity but trust that there are several posters out there that are pretty up to date on the progress and plans for the game. You can also join the IRC chat. CCP has people on there all the time. |

This is a real beta. Technically it might be more of an alpha, actually. There's a lot of stuff that isn't in the game yet, so it's not really feature complete. CCP has no experience with FPS or console games and I guess this one is too high profile to just wing it. Unfortunately we're still in the annoying, bug-ridden stage that is mostly only experienced by people employed by the company.
They're still developing the game as we go, not just ironing out the kinks. It's a long road ahead, but aside from the crippling technical issues each build seems to be getting better. I think at this point CCP just wants to get the game working, and make the minor tweaks later. Remains to be seen if that will work on a console or not. |

I would agree with everything you wrote if we havenGÇÖt been so close to a supposed release.
If we ignore the rumours and slip-ups that might or not mean anything, my take on the situation is that we have official word that CCP is planning for a release this year. That is 2 months from now, I get the impression that we need at least the following todo before that:
- Test and balance a heap of different combat suits and weapons not available now.
- Test and balance more maps?
- Test a battle tutorial and get it into a usable state.
- Balance orbital bombardment preferable into a situation where it is completely over powered so it will actually be used.
And hopefully some or all of this:
- Test a AI and refine it into actually working?
- Test a mission mechanic of some sort, primarily making sure these aren't completely over powered compared to playing pvp.
- Test some sort of industrial mode, with resource gartering?
Those are the big things I think, these will take time to get right. I don't know how many small things there are but I get the feeling quite a few. One I think of right now is that I can't seem to find the wallet log isn't there one? |

@Sir Kak
I'm not gonna sit here and say the game is good to go. I was merely pointing out that there isn't a "real beta" hiding somewhere, this is a real beta. Kind of misunderstood your meaning, there's been a lot of stupid people on here who think a "beta" is whatever PR stunt companies put out 2 weeks before release and usually only features the first few minutes of the game. Back in olden times when I was young (AKA the mid 90's) that was called shareware. Now it's a "beta", but same thing really.
Now i see where you're coming from and yea. I'm a bit concerned myself, honestly. I know they've got a lot more stuff developed and I'd wager the lack of more maps has to do with limited servers up, memory leaks and all manner of nasty crap. Only thing I'll say is there's probably not going to be any resource gathering, that'll be left up to the eggers. We're only mercs, it's their planet. And no, there isn't a transaction log or journal yet.
My biggest fear is that they have nerfed the game in to being completely unbalanced and nothing short of a complete overhaul is going to fix it. But that remains to be seen. |
