The hackers released the LV0 key, which they say they would never have done had one of them not leaked it to some Chinese hackers who were about to launch a Custom Firmware, for money, site. The problem I see, and have with this is what this will mean for the games? With the LV0 key out I see a risk of exploits and hacks/mods and cheats to become quite prevalent. Something that have killed just about every game when they were flooded with it.
Is this something CCP is planning on preventing to the best of their ability? |

Thing is, they brick any PS3 not already hacked, because newer ones above 3.55 have a 0.5 key in them, which instantly bricks the ps3. Other than CoD, most games aren't hacked. |

They're pretty keen on stamping out such behaviour in Eve ... I don't doubt they'll do their best to bring the same justice to DUST.
However they will probably have a steep learning curve with an unfamiliar system. |

Icy Tiger, the problem is that with the LV0 keys in hand, the system can not tell if it's been hacked, neither can Sony. |

You couldn't pay me to hack a console. I always build my own computers so I run whatever I feel like. But a console...I dunno. Seems like such a big risk. Sure, updates might cause me a mild annoyance sometimes but I don't have to worry about bricking my system. Guess I'm too poor for that crap. |

It might still, but as you said, Dust is essentially running serverside, making cheats fairly hard to accomplish |

They'd have to hack CCP servers and CCP Segres does not mess around, anything that look wrong on the logs he kills with infectious fire. Also CCP Segres is well feared from just lurking on the bot fourms people getting banned and they're not even on the same computers, networks, emails, or accounts and hes managing to nail their main accounts still. |

Sony updated. 4.30 was required for me to play dust, and I honestly don't see the point in getting on PSN with a hacked PS3 anyhow. I preferred the system where if you wanted pirated games, you had to play offline games only. As for people being able to cheat in DUST 514, keep an eye out for anything unusual and report it to CCP.
As for releasing whatever was released, GG to the hackers. Like it or not these types of people force Sony to step their security game up. This isn't a first, and it wont be a last.
EDIT: the 4.30 update is irrelevant, but +1 karma to releasing this for free rather then letting the leaked info get sold. Media is saying that it's not a total crisis since the PS Orbis should be incoming soon. |

The thing is there's off the shelf hacks out there for pretty much every unreal engine game on PC. Sure they've not hit the consoles yet, but there's never really been the option to try. Just look what happened when kids started hacking CoD using the same tools you use on PC. It's quite possible we will see the same thing happen here.
Also, afaik Sony don't brick hacked PS3's. Well, if they do, it's certainly not all of them and I know that from experience. |

Lv0 is of no use in Dust since like peeps have said before it's all serverside.
They had the key for a while and only released it so others didn't make money on they hack/find. Whilest I agree at some point that once paid for the consoles 'should' be ours, I also agree with Sony locking the hell out of their system and fight any unneeded atttacks on PSN that way.
I never hacked my sonys, and never will since I kinda digg my online gaming and the easy access to the PSstore. For those that want to give it try, good for them, just don't come complaining once you brick your $300+ ps3 since in some cases that is bound to happen. i remember the awesome numbers of fattys that never made it through the first CF's and Kernell hacks back in the days, and wouldn't want to be one of their owners.
The psp hacking scene has come quite far over the years... ps3 hacking is still in the beginning of their way up due too Sonys quite agressive locks. This has an shall always be a game of cat and mouse in which both will lead for a small period of time, until the other finds a 'new solution'.
I'm not really concerned about all this since the combined Sony/CCP peeps shall keep our servers hackfree (or at least i Hope) so that a second Cod won't happen in an otherwise 'soon to be' awesome game.

The reason you can't play dust without the FW update is that PSN won't let you log in without it. You may be running on CCP servers, but they get their user info from PSN. |

I'm of two minds on this. One being that consoles are ours and we should be able to do with them as we please, the other being that the entire business model of consoles are that they sell them at a loss, at least early on, and have to recoup their loss through games.
Another is security and preventing piracy. If only the console makers would institute a market for second hand games, at a small transfer fee even, and otherwise stop being quite as protectionist, the hacks would be less devastating than they are now. The OtherOS provided a means to that end. It allowed those wanting to play with the Cell CPU the means to do so. And to this day I think the removal of it was the biggest mistake Sony did, the hackers who first hacked it even said that with it available, they wouldn't have bothered trying. Geohot broke that sandbox the OtherOS provided, but looking at what he had to do to achieve it, it was not something many others would have been able to do , let alone would want to do. He had to solder extra boards and such onto the main board. |
