I have a USB keyboard but not a USB mouse with me so I cant easily test for myself or anytime soon really
Which do you prefer? I just read they added KBM support a while back and was very, very surprised
I'm one of the few who actually greatly enjoys controller based shooters, but I like PC shooters as well. That being said, controller shooters are only fun because everyone is on a level playing field. I couldn't imagine playing a game like Counterstrike trying to use a controller against everyone using a mouse.
DUST is a very different game, and it's possible they might be more balanced here. I've only been using a controller in DUST so far and things have been going great. Of course there are occasionally difficulties in keeping aim on a moving target who starts sprinting right before they are out of health but the challenge is part of the fun and gets natural with a bit of practice. Still... everyone knows a mouse is capable of snapping onto targets and tracing them with much greater ease. Is it easier to use a mouse in DUST? Are there any artificial limitations placed on the mouse that make it on par with the controller and possibly unbearable to use (would be good in my opinion to be honest) ?
Really I am still very surprised to hear they decided to add mouse support for this game since everyone with a PS3 has a control but not everyone uses a mouse. Sounds like anyone who wants to be at the upper tier will be forced to use a mouse. I read they are adding in factors that read what control you are using into matchmaking but what is to stop sudden switches and will the matches be 100% exclusive? I have some serious doubts.
Other than that, awesome game.
added thought - One thing that can be really cool about console shooters with a control is you can sit back (even though probably end up leaning forwards and getting into it a bunch, but you know what i mean) and relax while you play. Keyboard and mouse really requires the constant 'lean in,' hands on, deal. I never liked using a Keyboard and Mouse setup on a coffee table to project my PC image onto the bigscreen while sitting on a couch, it just didn't feel natural or comfortable, and I'm a bit sad I will likely be forced to do so in order to perform at the highest potential. |

Keyboard would be pretty good with the ability to edit keys.
Mouse is pretty hopeless at present.
I actually prefer the Dual Shock atm (and its not that great). Seriously thinking about getting an adapter for the XBox controller.

Well KBM worked quite well on precursor. Now it's a bit more wonky due to a lower vertical speed compared to horizontal one. Lucky for me, i had the possibility to tune my mouse (hell i didnt even know until i decided to actually read the damn manual) wich helped a little to get a decent Y speed.
Before that perso fix, controller was almost more pleasant to play with for me. But as a former PC FPSer, i wont ever be able to enjoy myself more than with KBM.
And yeah, customised keys would be cool ! |

It's a pain in the ass having the controller decoupling half way through a match through disuse, but I couldn't comprehend playing the game with a controller, regardless of how gimped one or other is. Turning was painfully slow in the last beta and vertical look speed is slow now, but you deal with it. It is what it is.

Would be interesting to hear what some of the chaps that have a good kill rate.
Out of curiosity, would any old USB keyboard and Mouse work?
And I know this question might seem a little odd, but have you got any ideas on a decent table to assist in using the keyboard and mouse?
I try and sit in a 90degree angle as I am at a PC for long periods, this means that leaning over a coffee table will break me in half within 30 minutes.

Any usb KBM should work. In my case, I just plug my PS3 to my PC moniter use my PC KBM on my PC table.
As a PC only gamer myself. I can't aim for kittens using controller. I have no other choice but using KBM. As wonky as it may be (and Yes Key customization is desperately need CCP) I still owned ppl left and right.
I believe that all issue KBM user experience so far is not a bug nor technical issue(may be part of it), it's intentional. It's an attempt from CCP side to closer the gap between KBM user and controller user. It's just a bit wonky atm. |

Hey dude, if i understand right, your controller turns off because you use KBM ? Check the PS3 setting for controller, you can turn off the auto-swtich off due to inactivity ;) |

ive tried it to play with mous and keyboard, but it sucks and thought about it, how stiff i sit in front of my ps3... thats why i prefer to lie in the couch while playin. much more comfortable than sitting stiff like a bimbo. |

What sort of a sound setup do you have?
My monitor does not have sound and I am trying to work out the best way to get it without unplugging my whole PC everytime.
Also... I have a spare keyboard that has a fairly long USB cable connection, however my only spare mouse does not. My keyboard has spare USB slots in it, would plugging my mouse into one of these work?
*edit*
Just realised that I have a BT headset arriving over the weekend. This was supposed to be for comms, but will it transmit all sounds?
Cheers

Just tried the mouse and Keyboard.
Had to move everything around and it meant playing without sound.
Much much nicer. I got my highest kill count (which is still woeful) at 6 but also had my highest death count at 14.... though, I hasten to add it was against the French crew... was nice to see that they didn't spare a corpie of theirs who landed on our side.
I have a mouse that has a button on the top that means you can change the speed at which it moves etc (or tracks) and I found a nice balance, which I can't remember now. BUT the vertical movement was terrible, as posted by others here.
Regards
Jax
*edit*
I've ordered a gun and move which arrives at various points over the next few days, but Ill do my best to use mouse and kb until then. |

I play on both mouse/keyboard and controller.
I think sniping is way better on mouse/keyboard. There are two reasons for this, I can get my sensitivity way up on mouse which allows me to maneuver through the terrain much easier. Having the space bar as jump allows me to climb mountains I had a lot of trouble climbing with a controller. Also the added sensitivity allows me to zero in on people faster and I hit my second shot more often.
When I use the assault rifle I prefer to use my controller. I am much more accurate at close/medium range with a controller. That being said I bought a 360 controller for xbox. If i had to choose between using a standard ps3 controller and a m/k i'd pick the m/k. The joysticks on ps3 are terrible for FPS. |

To be honest, I do have spare keyboard, mouse and a second monitor for my PC so I just use those :p
As for sound my current setup is using AV cable, plug it to AV to 3.5mm Jack adapter then plug my speaker with it. Your BT headset should work as well.
I'm not sure about your Keyboard USB slot but I heard using USB hub work so I think there is good chance yours is working as well. I plan to get a USB hub and try USB speak/headset too. |

One the fix the current sensitivity issue (which is a known bug to the dev team) then KBM will be great.

I use the KB/M and really the only advantage that I feel I have is more awareness around me. It is much easier for me to check left and right and everywhere else while using the mouse than the thumbstick. I see people running to places spinning left and right occasionally and I think to myself that guy must be using a mouse, the ones that just sprint straight ahead I would imagine are stick users. |

KBM is always better, regardless of game. Way more tactile. That's why I'm disappointed they included it in a primarily controller based game. They could help close the gap with a better aim assist. Speaking of which, that should really be on by default. |

Movement wise might be useful for the tank tbh except for activating the booster tbh which seems dodgy tbh |

Loving the KB/M.....
Kills are up, not a lot, but still getting used to it. ISK is up by around 75% or so, so that is nice.
Only thing is, my SP is WAY down.
I think as I am able to target now I seem to only be focusing on killing and not my usual support stuff.......... need to work on that.
Sadly my 'gun' doesnt arrive until mid next week :) |

Thanks, I didn't know that.... although it was set to off already, so the problem remains.

I do not know what they did this patch but the mouse is WAY to sensitive. I "blew" on the mouse to see how far my character rotated and damn near did a 180. Before everything was just right besides not being able to map the keys they way i want.
Slowly getting use to how fast the turn speed is now but most of the time i find i keep turning to fast and throwing grenades into walls or me running into them trying to go around the corner. |

I use the Mouse and the DS3. For me it works. No complaints other than your standard "mouse is to sensitive" comments. |

I dunno what's with the hate on the mouse in this thread, but K+M is epic fun. Difference in gaming for me is going 5/3 with a controller or going 15/1 with a mouse.
There are limitations on the mouse but you can get around it with a nice gaming mouse that has a self-adjusting sensitivity on it. (That way it adjusts its own output, whereas the Ps3 adjusts its input) |
