So I am going to post here with some recommendations and ask a basic question at the same time, The irony right
This game is a blast, I liked EVE a lot as well even though I dont play anymore
They did a great job with DUST, I like the gun sounds, the atmosphere, the graphics, the vehicles, it's all really great and well done. Cant wait to see how they tie it in with EVE. I have a feeling it's going to blow my mind. I am slightly concerned that DUST players with ties to strong nullsec EVE corps will have a massive ISK and therefor vehicle and equipment advantage, but I am sure they will figure things out well.
There is a part of the game that causes immediate concern for me - how the radar works and how enemies show up as red blips on the screen
Maybe I just dont understand the system but it doesnt seem to work perfectly or even logically right now, people show up from across the map when they dont seem to be firing their weapons or spotted by anyone. In a recent game I was running in the open from one control point to another and a red blip marked a sniper that was hidden on a ridge, even though none of my allies saw him and they had not fired yet. I was able to dodge their shots and close within range to shoot them even though if I had not been notified or their presence their location and patience might have paid off for them instead. I know there are skills that I think apply to this but I dont understand how they work.
So I have a few suggestions for improving the system. I think enemies should only appear on the radar and on the screen as red ^s if they are firing their weapons. Maybe some of whatever drives the current system or some automatic team-member-spotting enemies resulting in marking could stay in place but I dont think its needed. It seems enemies locations are shown waaay too often right now.
The second part of the change would be to borrow one of the best things about the new TRIBES game. There is a single button press that points out an enemy or location to your team. If you are aimed at an enemy heavy and press the key, you broadcast 'Enemy Heavy Sighted!' to your team and the location is visually marked for them, the way markers work in DUST now. If you point at a tank it says 'Enemy Tank Sighted!' etc. Similar to how the current Objective Marking for Squads works in DUST, you can aim at an objective and with one single button broadcast to your team 'Attack Objective A!' or 'Defend Objective B!' Based on what You see but your team might not. I think DUST would GREATLY benefit from a functionality like this that allows for rapid teamwork and communication.
Agree? Disagree? Do you all think the frequency enemy locations are displayed is fine right now? Is there some system in place I dont understand? Would the 'enemy sighted' and 'attack objective' button be a bad idea?
Also....
Any plans on seeing multi racial variations of each dropsuit type?
And I have some fitting questions...
How do you all like to fit Heavy Suits using HMGs for defending/attacking Skirmish objective points in close quarters? Armor buffers or shields? I'm thinking tanky mods rather than damage increase, or do you find damage mods to be effective? What about Assault suits using ARs and Shotguns for the same purpose?
Thanks

There is a sensor radius that compares sensor strength with signature to detect and add dot. Many hidden modifiers I think. Dots are also added if an enemy looks at enemy centered fairly close for a moment, with sniper rifle scope I was making chevrons appear from ranges they were just block specks through the scope.
Friendly sniper may have spotted the enemy but died before taking shot.
Shield tank works well, armour buffer on non-scouts works too. The assualt with shotgun/smg works well in close quarters. Ar is usable in cqc, but not as good as smg/shotgun at that range. Heavies with hmg in cqc work very well, in particular if they have a logi supporting them. |

Basically about showing up as a red dot: if you're a basic assault sniper like those people probably were, your signature profile will be so large that looking in the general direction you're in (especially with improved scanning) will cause you to show up on the radar.
HOWEVER: if you're set up like a scout with a bunch of skills and modules to shrink your signature profile, someone will practically have to aim directly at you for you to show up.
Don't know much else. |

I think its more of a player tracking issue, because I have been hit by a car in this beta that never showed up on my radar. Also players shooting at me dont show up on my radar either when there right next to me. Ive also had times where a player ran behind a rock only to be shot in the back 2 seconds later by them when i didnt follow them behind the rock. I hope it gets fixed because at the moment it makes no sense to me to be able to see players 600 ft away from me, behind walls but not be able to see someone 2 ft around me. |
