This debate is designed to explore the clash between hardcore and casual gamers. To be clear we are discussing the obligation or lack thereof between Dust players. IGÇÖll give my argument to kick this debate off, and let the forums take it from there.
Morally, I do not believe that Dust mercs have any responsibilities to each other.
Practically, I do believe that we need some people to care about each other for the game to be enjoyable to the most people as well as stay profitable.
Dust mercs have no obligations to other players. Social responsibilities are real world concerns and do not apply in game. Too many people GÇô myself included GÇô have this expectation. We expect people to invest themselves into their game. This is a poor expectation. Dust Mercs are no more people than soldiers in RISK. There will never be a GÇ£Save DarfurGÇ¥ movement or a religious protest in Dust. Guess how many abused animals 10,000 ISK can save? None.
There are individual differences between a person and his avatar GÇô differences that players generally take for granted. We kill for money. We donGÇÖt believe in gun control. Civilians carry automatic weapons and military grade explosives. GÇ£We all know that. We know this is a video game, not real lifeGÇ¥ some might say. YouGÇÖre right. This is just a game. LetGÇÖs treat it and itGÇÖs players the same way.
Why do we hold mercs to the same standard as people? Why shouldnGÇÖt I be allowed to be veteran social worker and a kitten? What obligation do I owe you to make things harder for myself so that you have fun?
For those who still disagree, consider this: YouGÇÖre playing Dust as usual when you meet GÇ£Newb LolzGÇ¥. Newb Lolz walks into open combat and doesnGÇÖt use cover. He also happens to be on the same team as Mr. Zitro. You and Newb Lolz continue keep bumping into each other and you win every time. Do you owe it to Newb Lolz to kill him less often and challenge players like Mr. Zitro so that Newb Lolz has more fun?
I for one wouldnGÇÖt go out of my way to find harder targets to kill when there are perfectly easy targets in front of me.
GÇ£So youGÇÖre in favor of spawn camping, then?GÇ¥
On paper, yes. Practically, no. This is the divide between hardcore and casual gamers. Should I be penalized for killing people who spawn in the same space? No, no more than you should br for memorizing the route someone takes from A to B and killing him every time he does that.
I have been in Dust since the GÇ£Drop ship crushing, Creodon-AR-is-ridiculousGÇ¥ build. IGÇÖm familiar with spawn camping in dust. ItGÇÖs annoying. It makes me want to play something else. But I dutifully set up drop uplinks by the enemy redzones when I could.
That is the fundamental difference I see between hard-core and casual gamers. HC gamers lean more on the moral side of the argument while casual gamers lean more on the practical.
