Do you find the SMG to be adequate for personal defense against infantry?
assuming that your Heavy Weapon slot has a AV weapon in it. |

Yes. The merc pac smg is great for primary for now. After you skill up the forge work on smg to unlock the breach smog its all you need. |

yup the toxin SMG is an awesome sidearm for any AV fit, skilling up sharpshooter and operation makes it as deadly as HMG |

all I needed to hear.
i am planning on being pretty much full-on AV, with Locus Grenades and a SMG for personal defense(wish there were more sidearms) and don't feel like running to supply depot to switch to a HMG when there are no vehicles out. also, it seems to always happen that as soon as I spawn with a HMG, i see a buncha vehicles. |

i hear ya, train the SMG it is a reliable weapon once skilled it can go toe to toe with ARs |

I use pistols for sidearms on all my fits. At the moment an SMG would work better but since the changes to the Scrambler Pistol Operation skill once I get a few more levels in to I will be doing a lot of killing with them. Figure I might as well practice now. I also like them since they've got pretty good range and most people don't expect it. I've even gone on the offensive with enemies behind cover. 3 or 4 good shots will take most anyone down. Plus if I can sneak up on a sniper in a scoutsuit a pointblank headshot is almost certain OHK.
Also, bear in mind that an advanced HMG will chew through an LAV in about half a clip. Most of the time the driver will hop out and you can gun him down, hack the LAV, rep it and drive away. |

They're not easy. Even though the operation skill gives you an extra round in the clip you still have to be very accurate. The breach pistol is more damaging but the initial range is a bit limited. SMG's are great for when someone gets right up in your face, pistols are better when there's a little bit of distance. But it's a trade off, since even though SMG's are nice you're going down if they're using an AR at long range.
Also, I haven't seen this mentioned before but when you're using an HMG it decreases your movement speed. So whenever I'm trying to cover some distance I always have my pistol out. I use it to hit them a couple of times from longer range so they move to cover, then I bust out the HMG and move in on them. You can't really do that with an SMG since they'll just hit you from out of your range. Pistols aren't for everyone, but you should still try them out. They can be absolutely devastating in the right hands. |

I try to use pistol on E3 build, but each time I attack Heavy on close he always killed me with SMG. Prototype Pistol have less dps than SMG, that's why I use just SMG now.
I never used AV grenades I always missed PG or CPU to fit them with dmg mods and armor modules. |
