So, Otosan Ookami and I were talking about sniper weapon mechanics, and I had a few concepts on racial weapons.
Caldari - Rail Guns Same as we have now, mostly. The only changes I'd suggest are a slightly slower round travel time and a slight quantity of ballistic falloff to raise the skill ceiling a little and better reward skilled marksmen.
Gallente - Particle Guns I was a big fan of that Gallente-style particle accelerator tank cannon in the E3 build, with it's higher direct damage and far lower splash damage. Based on that, I'd say set up a Gallente weapon in somewhat the same vein, albeit with a heat meter similar to the Laser Rifle and HMG, but far more forgiving, and basically serves to keep you from being able to fire it too fast, as it would have less kick than a Rail Gun-type rifle. Its damage would be halfway between the rail gun and the following:
Amarr - Beam Laser Rifles Anyone who's played with the Focus Rifle in Halo: Reach will probably be able to skip the explanation. This weapon would have similar characteristics to the Laser Rifles, but with higher base damage, faster damage buildup, and far faster heat buildup, as well as faster power drain. You would exchange possible OHK ability with being able to burn down more heavily armored targets over time and having no kick whatsoever.
Minmatar - Anti-Material Rifles I'm using that name because I'm not sure how else to name the concept. Take the current characteristics of the Experimental rifle, double the damage of the round while keeping the explosion to a tiny radius. You end up with a weapon that's very difficult to use, but will reward you with an OHK on anything but a Heavy. It would also do pretty well against un-shielded LAVs as a bonus.
That's just a basic layout of the concept. Thoughts? |

Caldari sounds good.
Gallente seems to be needing of some love in terms of the damage, though with the heat build up, it may have more of the speed of shooting as a tactical rifle, but how many shots/how fast can you shoot without it burning your hands?
Amarr rifle seems ok, but it is also a huge risk to use as it will be a continuous beam and any would be sniper would be able to track the Amarrian sniper rifle really easy.
Minmatar sniper seems to be quite overpowered if it were to say have the capacity to reload as fast as say the current standard sniper, and would also wreck against armor based LAV a little to hard maybe? Seems like a Mass Driver with a super packed punch in a smaller slug and longer barrel. |

I'm assuming the Minmatar anti-material rifle would have high recoil, pretty significant projectile drop, and slower firing speed, but all in all provide a devastating shot?
I'm lovin' the ideas, and variety is always glorious. |

Well the idea with the Minmatar one would be that it has the most ballistic falloff and slowest traveling shots, so getting long-range kills with it would require expert aim and leading of your target. Its firing sound should also be the loudest of all of them, possibly even echoing off of the environment if fired from a mountainside, for instance. |

The Minmatar Rifle needs to have an enhanced multiplier for hitting weak spots instead of an enhanced damage output in general. Otherwisse, things don't look too bad.
On a tangent... Just a question, but why is it that people always want the railguns to have travel time? They fire in excess of the speed of sound just to do damage, so I was wondering why it seems to be such a prevalent opinion. |

In excess of the speed of sound isn't the same as being instantaneous, and even at 4kps, it would still take a quarter second for the round to reach it's target at a range of one kilometer. Moreso a concern in my case is the complete lack of ballistic falloff, because no matter how fast the round travels, it can't outrun gravity. |

I was talking to CCP Wolfman a few minutes ago, and he said that the Experimental sniper is indeed an indication that they're both looking into mechanics for the sniper weapons of other races, AND are looking at rebalancing the ones we have now. |
