I recently joined the beta and thus far find the overall feel of the game quite refreshing. A nice abitious game that I hope succeeds. It's nice to see an actual beta on the ps3 for a change as well.
Anyway, the only real issue I have with the game so far (outside of framerate) is the grenade mechanics both on the giving and receiving ends. One example was a time myself and a squadmate had taken cover behind some crates in front of a doorway with an enemy trapped inside. I aimed the grenade in a way that looked as though it would go inside the room but instead the grenade hit the top of the doorway and fell straight down. Squadmate threw a grenade and his did the same. I then aimed further down and tried again thinking the grenade would roll into the room but this one also lobbed into the air and hit the top of the door and fell straight down. Guy beside me also tried again and again hit the top of the door. We were 0-4 in attempting to hit a doorway that took up a quarter of the screen. Other times I will be in the open and try to throw one from a distance and as I am watching for where it lands I am blown up by it. How it got near me, I have no idea. I have come to envision a catapult mounted to my back and with the push of L2, my character pulls the string releasing the catapult lobbing a grenade from behind me. The weight of the grenade is about that of a crumpled piece of paper too.
Also, the bulk of my deaths are to grenades and the bulk of those are "mystery" deaths where I am instantly killed and have no idea why, or how, or by who. I only know it was from a grenade by reading the kill spam. I have no problem dying to grenades as long as I know there is a grenade and it "feels" like I was blown up. Usually I am running along and lose control of my character and think the game is getting wonky. Nope, I was apparantly blasted through the air by a silent grenade.
I know CCP have much bigger fish to fry at the moment but, as is, the grenade mechanics are among the worst I have seen. It would be nice if by release some weight was added to the grenade along with improved ability to control where they are thrown (or lobbed) and maybe some type of distinct audio cue to alert the player that a grenade is nearby. I do like the lack of grenade arc and onscreen indicators however. It's nice to play a shooter that isn't akin to riding a bike that has 12 sets of training wheels welded to the frame.
And real quick. Is there a known problem with sprinting? I don't think this needs a thread but most of the games I play I can't sprint for more than 5 feet at a time. Sometimes though I can sprint for the duration of my stamina with one click of L3. Usually though I find myself pushing and holding L3 so much my thumb actually is getting sore lol. |
