This game, while FTP HAS to make a profit somehow,,,, im sure CCP have this covered but I dont see why anyone would be spending too much through the game currently (especially for the -ú85 offer on the psstore!!).
There was a similar situation with DCUO (the other f2p MMO on the ps3),,, since they introduced a ftp model (seeing revs increase by 800% according to some estimates) they very strongly argue that their game is NOT pay to win,,, but advantages can be gained by paying. This includes a monthly membership which makes life much much easier... and various other schemes throughout.
DCUO has a similar restraint to Dust's weekly SP cap.... like most other MMO's you have to play set missions every week to gain the rewards you need to progress (Dust essentially follows this model, but in a less constructed way, meaning the player has more choice). These raids reset every Thursday. This worked really well I thought, and allowed casual gamers to find time every week for their missions,, and allowed hardcore gamers to do a bunch of other stuff too,,, meaning everyone who ensured they played each thing once a week would keep in competetive progression compared to everyone else.
Where it went wrong (in my opinion) is when they introduced replay tokens,,, that allowed you to ignore the weekly wait and play the raids (receiving ALL rewards) as often as you were willing to pay for. This inevitably lead to some people maxing out their top tier suits within a few weeks (and i suppose then having to go back to work to pay for everything they had just done) and disbalanced the strengths of people everywhere (since t4pve gear was stronger than the top level pvp gear during pvp battles lol)
My fear with the introduction of the weekly SP cap is that it puts the game into a perfect position to bring this ability in at some point. IE pay however much money and your SP cap would be reset (keeping everything you had earned so far). In fact, with so few avenues of revenue apparent in the game, I'm certain we'll see new ones being added soon, and i'm fearful of the effect this may cause.....
Simple fact is,,, DCUO is run by Sony, and they have learnt a LOT of lessons about the MMO market through that game. Since i'm sure they're having a lot to do with CCP and the development of Dust, it wouldnt come as a surprise if they started putting some of those lessons into effect here (and I dont necessarily see that as a bad thing, its reassuring Sony are putting so much effort into helping CCP bring a product to a new platform and market)
However, with DCUO the replay tokens were the straw that broke the back in my case, and the day it was released was the last day i ever played the game. I'm not so sure it would bother me as much with Dust, but would definately irk me somewhat....
So i'm asking the community here......
How would you feel if that scenario came into existance.....
And considering they need to make money somewhere, what (if anything) would tempt YOU into buying something (whilst making sure it would be seen as 'fair' by other players)

Hey Jimbo,
I was a DCUO Legend, I wrote the Gadgets guide, controller guide etc. I worked for SONY as an ambassador for them just for DCUO. I was working with them prior to replay tokens, I wrote to every single SONY dev I could to explain that replay badges will kill the game. When they did replay badges for pvp, me and many, many others saw the future of DCUO and left. 2 years and 9000 posts in forums, I have not touched it once since then.
If CCP does listen to SONY, I fear the day they do anything close to this. It ruined DCUO and it will ruin Dust.

Replay tokens was the same reason i stopped playing DCUO. Its just too much and too obvious that they sided with p2w.

Shame i wasnt the only one who left because of it,, it was a great game (and i do hope Sony show CCP the positive aspects for dust),, but doesnt surprise me it happened....
Ah ha,,, I ran a minor league of a hundred villains for 6 months with my Sorc healer 'Niquara' (EU PS3 server).....
I knew your guides well lol,,,, is where i sent all our trolls who thought they were tanks, and they always came back way better!! (let me take this opportunity to thank you for saving me so much time explaining it all to people!)
So you've not been tempted back by utility belts??? hmm
Serious point though,, shows how delicate these things can be since a move like that caused so many committed players to leave..... no matter what gets introduced after the event......
this just seems like a big setup to introduce it along the line (and if not intentionally, they wouldnt be financially prudent if they werent at least considering it)--- im not disputing them making money, thats life..... but would rather payment methods be introduced that are tempting enough for people to use that prevents options like this being introduced, thats all

I for one completely agree with what your saying, and I'm sure there are plenty of ways to make plenty of cash for CCP and Sony, even more so in Dust 514 then DCUO. I mean just one off the top of my head is pay per view Corp / Merc death matches, or something to that effect.
I can't see them resorting to the level of replay badges here, well here's hoping. |

LOL, Jim no not even utility belts would drag me back to DCUO. I made life long friends from that though, had 2 years of great gaming and I liked being the DP of DCUO, I was the Merc with a mouth on the forums. Ah the good ole days..
So many of us left just because of replay badges, I think 5 guide makers took off when I did. Sony tried to "kitten" me with the guide, but I countered them in court. Look at DCUO now, no one wants to play but kids and moms at home. My fav was the bans for cursing in the game, but you had a filter to stop it.. jesus that game got to PC for me.
Glad to help, I enjoyed that aspect of the game. I look forward to doing the same for dust, minus the guides of course.
Well glad to see there are some MMO vets in here sides me, all of these COD/BF/Halo kids drive me nuts..
Well take care, if you see me in game im usual in team chat.

What no guides???? LOL
i just wonder if my 100 snowballs in the bank have melted yet
haha i never quite got my head around the profanity filter bans,,, at least we have kittens here!!!! Fortunately it sounds like Dusts economy won't be, well y'know...... and no doors in dust makes me
Absolute best thing about DCUO was the community that played it, I guess we were all patient (especially when plugging watery vents in the walls with rocks!), helped each other out and were up for a laugh,,, here's to Dust being the same....

I most certainly disagree with putting in replay badges it would ruin this game completely just like it did DCUO. I loved DCUO and left not to long after after they ruined PVP. Please don't let replay badges ruin another game that I am really starting to love.
If it is ever thought about PLEASE CCP LISTEN BETTER THAN SONY DID TO THERE COMMUNITY. |

I still think Pay per view would work, any number of events, from LAV races to death matches, Closed arena Games......
Lots of small things, like clutter for your Merc quarters, decal's and custom paint jobs for dropsuits or vehicle's, Extra spaces for Corp board room meetings to attach to your Merc quarters and the likes of that there, Extra spaces for displaying your dropsuits and favorite weapons...............ect, ect,
Basicly there is nearly a limitless number of things that can be done with this game over time that will make money other then pay to win marketing.

I moved from DCUO to Dust the day Replay badges hit PvP. Took down all the guides, and wrote Sony a nasty letter. Im still banned for LIFE on the forums.

This replay badges thing actually scares me, a lot. I've never heard about them before now, but the whole concept is so infinitely applicable to DUST that I'm scared Sony are going to try. Badges for increasing/resetting SP cap Badges for resetting cooldown timers on Orbital strikes. Stuff like that.
We don't need it, and I don't want it. It'll ruin the game. CCP already get AURUM sales, and a careful guess on my part tells me that the average AURUM usage will equate to $10-15 per month. Some less, some definitely more. |

Having not played DCUO, I cannot comment on the caps.
However, I feel that knocking the boosters out completely at this point just because of the weekly cap would be a bit of an overreaction. The idea of a FPS is that it is individual skill focused, not gear focused (i.e. Person A's skill as a player whould be the priamary determining factor, not their gear, which can still be a marginal factor). And while gear definitely can make a crucial difference in some cases, the difference should only be a few extra rounds into the torso. Theoretically, two people of equal skill should have an equal experience regardless of gear or skill points, with marginal differences as a result. |
