Just curious. They do very well in CQC, but I always had a trouble killing people outside of that range. I recently changed to a different class set-up before I knew of the skill.
So basically yea, how are they with range? :D |

a HMG is a CQC weapon, the range isn't going to be that far. |

They are great at mid range. But you need to use short bursts. If you run with a squad you would prolly get a lot of assists at mid range. Also you would make a great meat sheild! I use them most of the time. Keep increasing you Heavy sharpshooter skill and you will be fine. |

I really don't recommend skilling up sharpshooter.
It tightens your spray making it less effective at close range where you want the spread.
He other problem is when. You try to engage at long range you become a huge target for other enemies and is rarely a good idea. |

with the assault hmg i can get all the range i need,
and i dont think skilling up sharpshooter does anything to the spread, just the effective range |

Try firing at a wall, from different ranges. You can see your spread change.
Also the longer you hold your fire the tighter it becomes and more accurate that is the risk reward they have implemented for when you are about to overheat you are shooting a very tight accurate spray. Of course if you lock up you can't switch weapons or use melee or toss nades you only get to pound your gun for 6 seconds and try not to die. |

I wasted money on the sharpshooter skill but only trained one level before I realized it was a complete waste. Might be worth it for forge guns but that's on down the road. Everything is percentages so if the gun has a short range to begin with you're not going to see any worthwhile returns on it. A much better skill would be rapid reload or your max ammo capacity. Training the reloading skill to say IV knocks a second and a half off your time not shooting 5,000 rounds in to someone's face, which is huge. Same reason rapid reload on your sidearm isn't a very good investment, but adding range to a pistol is amazing. |

if you max it out it's 40% more range. This is very useful. But don't waste your sp on it untill you get support skills for fitting, dropsuit skills, gernade skills. There are tone of more useful things to sink your sp into. But when the game is a year old don't be surprized at the range of HMGs |

Rapid reloads and HMG capacity are waste if you got a good squad. It makes more sense to get the Sharpshooter and the CPUI upgrades. 1. It helps you carry more stuff or put on better mods 2. The HMG has 425 rounds in its clip and 1200 rounds in total. It would be a while before you have to reload or restock 3. The HMG has 5 times the ammo of a sub mach i.e 80 * 5 = 400 which does approximately the same amount of damage. You should be able to take out atleast 10 people before you even have to reload 4. You should be able to put on atleast 2 complex heavy damage mods which makes you invincible if you have the right kinda squad.
Heavies are not supposed to go at it alone! You will be owned by a scout with a rock if you try that. |
