So my nephew was over today and asked about Dust, we fired it up, had a brief chat about some of the mechanics and concepts and he jumped right in. Now he got completely destroyed (and made my main character look bad but whatever) but enjoyed every second of it. And he goes to show that a twelve year can grasp the grand concepts of the Eve/Dust universe and find them exciting. The PC snobs and console leets need to accept that to succeed Dust will need the kids and casuals to be able to sustain the game so that those of us waiting on null warfare will have a game that will still be around in the long term.
Flying monkeys and knuckle draggers can flame away but part of what will ensure Dusts success will come from people dropping the attitude, taking some people under your wing, and not trolling noobs in highsec.
Do what you want now, we're in beta and we all signed up to break and test stuff, but come launch ask yourself if proto-stomping noobs in pubs, sitting in the redline boosting and trolling the forum with "go back to CoD" really helps the game and community.
Eve can survive just fine off of a community of a couple hundred thousand but if we have anywhere near the same split between carebear and hardcore on console then we are going to struggle if we don't have the numbers. Eve has a huge cultural divide between highsec and 0.0 dwellers. Dust is a fresh start it's our choice as to whether we grief or encourage in highsec, I say choose wisely, you may end up hurting yourself more than noobs if you decide to be a kitten. |

First FPS I ever played was CoD:MW2, I loved it, it got me into shooters. While looking for other shooters to try, and stumbled across a wikipedia page about MAG; 256 players sounded appealing, and the high tech looking Raven soldier on the cover lead me to believe it was a scifi shooter. It wasn't a scifi shooter, and I saw less than favorable reviews about it, but I bought it anyway. I hated MAG at first, but I stuck with it and eventually loved it. Dust is far more exciting than MAG was, so I think people can definitely be converted. If I could be converted to like that sort of game, others can too. |

It really depends on the person, obviously. Some people (OK, a LOT of people) just don't want to put time into things. So they stick with easy to play CoD and won't change, no matter how good other games are. Too many people are like this IRL as well.
Others are willing to put some work in to get some rewards, but they may or may not really stick with things for a long time, usually depending on real-life issues. These are the guys that will need convincing, but can be "turned". May not be easy, however.
Then, there are those who love the challenge of having to grind and work for their rewards. I have a feeling most people here are of this type, or are closer to this type then the middle one. Explain the game and you can probably get converts easily.
You just have to find the people that are receptive to this kind of game. |

Conversions haven't been real hard for Dust at all.
Every Sunday the "boys" come over for barbeque and beer, have been for years. In eight years of playing Eve, only one has picked up the game. Most others get glazed over eyes right about the time I get into the complexity and nuance of the market. Since testing Dust, its about all we do on the Sunday BBQs, plus a few days through the week. Two beta codes handed out and at least two have bought a PS3 already just for it.
It does suck a little when some drunk yahoo mass suicides your proto suits, but I haven't personally seen a FPS player yet that wasn't immediately drawn in. |

bankruptcy will prove you wrong.
the majority will scrape for tidbits in high sec.
the masses STILL think base raping is a viable tactic in a game with maps and spawn mechanics like these.
most will go bankrupt on multiple accounts for about a year or 2 before one of those accounts actually begins to amount to something worth playing causing the other 2 to be left behind.
it's not the game that will break these players down, it's their own static nature. doing the same old same old won't work once this game goes retail. not for the majority.
too many solo players attacking objectives by themselves. die respawing, trying again, die respawn, try again, tickets bleed, game ends...
eventually these kids will come to understand that what you spend verses what you earn leaves you broke. it'll take a while, but it'll become apparent as time goes by.
game's still fun though, even though there really isn't much going on yet but pro-zerg tdm.
