The laser rifle seems a good amarr weapon for this role. Caldari have been mentioned as having guass rifles, it figure something between ar and sniper in damage, rof, and range. Like a m-1 rifle to the gallette m-16. I picture minmatar having a m-240, m-60, or bar type light machine gun, splitting difference between hmg and smg. To stay consistent with eve range and dps should be between laser and ar. CCP said there will eventually be weapon mods, far enough out I not sure even soon(tm) would apply. Expansion after launch probably.

I have plenty of friends that play assault and use other things as well like LR, shotguns, smg's etc. Don't be sucked in to the assault rifle world. Other weapons are actually ore fun to play with because they bring more challenge.

My best class is just assualt though which I perfer. Im playing with logi right now using the mass driver mostly. But assualt is my first option.
