ok, so i went out and bought an external hard drive to back up my PS3. i know it has to be reformatted to work with the ps3's O.S. so i have a couple of questions...
1) does the PS3 reformat the external drive when i go to back it up, or do i need to us a PC to reformat the external?
2) i know the game data and user ID/Log in data will be saved, but what about the PS3's O.S.? i mean, what if i get YLOD and my HDD crashed and I had to get another HDD, or if i wanted to switch to a SSD? will the external drive save the O.S. as well as game data, or will i have to do something else?
info... the hard drive i bought is a TOSHIBA 320GB with "no software to install" "drag and drop" external hard drive. it is only powered by a USB cable, with no AC plug.

Use the backup utility.
The PS3 can format its own drives.
There are tons of resources online about this. Google is your friend. |

this +1
if you upgrade your hdd the ps3 will do its own thing with it. it will reformat it and erase everything on it, beware.
the ps3 does have its own backup utility, however, some games and game saves cannot be backed up, there may be a list of these games online? idk.

so everything i've found says i have to use my PC to reformat the external drive to FAT32? but then it says windows xp can't do anything over 32G? WTF?
also, i'm not trying to add any new content to my ps3. i only want to back up my system in case of loss. |

i downloaded swissknife, now i just have to learn how to use it. i hope this is easier and allows me to backup things over 4G. i think most of the games are over 4G anyway. |
