I've been using the ' WiFi' thing for PS3.. Pretty much since i Started. I've made posts and commented about the lag i get when aiming at enemys. The aiming lag spikes are rediculous..
can any of you confirm whether wifi with the PS3 is worse for lag spikes with aiming then WIRED connection??
IF Wired connection is less laggy i might go with that. I Don't know much about my Internet connection, I know it's Not slow. that's about it.
respond if you know about wifi vs wired with Dust 514. any improvements?
Thanks. |

i too use a wifi and my ping is 138ms + 3.5 which is pretty good as far as i know and ive never had any massive lag spikes
i know that the weather can interfere and depending on the placment in the house the microwave can too

Thanks for the quick reply SGT Garrisson
I don't know how to check my ping and i don't know what's good for ping.
as for the microwave it's downstairs and about 1 1/2 to 2 rooms over..
Yeah.. the lag spikes are pretty much when I go to aim. very frustrating. |

I use wifi (android for the win!) and the lag spikes are random. I don't generally have any problems except the 5 objectives map, and generally in EU/US primetime when the servers are heavily loaded.
In short, I believe its CCP's side that is letting us down. We are using their test server which, unlike the main EVE universe, was never intended for this many people at one time.
P.S. my wifi is faster than my old ADSL 2+ which was exceptional for EVE. |

1) open the start menu and click run
2) type " cmd " (this should open a dos prompt)
3) type " ping" followed by a server ip

I could only find how to do a rough speed check via 'Network Settings' > 'internet connection test' though it doesn't give actual ping speeds:
Upload: 576.4 kbps
Download: 3.7 Mbps
Limited use but better than nothing.

Thanks for your reply.
I tried testing mine, and for some reason the connection to PSN just fails so i don't even get readings, and yes i signed in first, it signs me out when i go to test then FAIL and no readings.. Weird.. I'm gunna try wired for the hell of it. brb..
hmm it seems there may be something wrong with my ethernet plug.. I live in an apartment complex most of the rooms have ethernet plugs in the walls, i dunno.. somethings wrong here.. it was working fine going to the computer.. wth.. I plugged it into a familys room it's working fine now.
for some reason i have a internet connection but it won't say anything for upload or download. oh well atleast i have the connection.. : ) |

Something funny.... My microwave actually screws with everything electronic on a certain side of the house... Being the side holding the PlayStation and modem (Stupid 1940's wiring). Too bad there's no room to switch things around. |

i ran a ping test from my ps3 using speedtest.net a while ago. i'm running an N+ router (wifi) with cable internet. my ps3 did a 40ms ping. it's not your system, it's the sisi server. i lag horribly on the 5 objective map. in fact, it's the only map i've ever froze on.
to run the ping test, i opened up my ps3 browser, and went to speedtest.net. you can't run the download/upload feature, but you can perform a ping test. |

you cannot do a ping test from ps3. if you use a website to ping from then your pinging from the website and not from your ps3.
if you cannot get a readout of the upload download speeds from your ps3 it might have something to do with your NAT Type. NAT Type 1 and 2 are best. 3 is worst, its the most restricted. also, when it doesn't give you the output you desire it usually tells you an error at the bottom. one i can think of off the top of my head is long packet fragmentation, but if your going through your apartment then there is nothing you can do about any of this. |

Wireless is for convenience not performance. There is a lot of wireless traffic in the air that can interfere with your wireless connection giving you lag spikes especially if someone else is using the same wireless channel(2.4 GHz is an extremely busy frequency with routers, microwaves, some cordless phones and a few rarer things that use it).
A properly working wired connection is better every time because there is no interference between the PS3 and the router giving you a consistent connection. |

Meh, I'm wired up with a 56ms latency to the NA server. I still get nasty lag spikes on Dust. The lag spikes are always worse when an enemy is in my view and legitimately causes me to lose firefights very frequently. On 5 point maps i have a constant lag that ranges from minorly annoying but playable all the way up to 1 frame every 4 seconds which is totally unplayable. The problem is absolutely on CCP's server side. I could connect wirelessly to test the difference but my router is 3 feet from my ps3 which would be a negligible difference from wired.
It's only logical to go wired if you can. If you can't, just get the router as close as possible to your ps3 and strive for line-of-sight (no obstructions such as walls, furniture, etc.). You could also buy or make a parabolic wifi antenna which directs and increases your wifi signal in whichever direction you point it. I've made one in the past to get my wifi signal to reach from the first floor on one side of my house to the 2nd floor on the other side of the house and it absolutely worked. I'd wait for the switch over to the TQ server before i go crazy running wires. The server is hugely at fault here and your wireless connection may just be fine when we're on a server that can handle the load. |

i always thought wireless could not take the speeds that hardwired can... so if you got 20meg broadband etc then id go wired anyway, no point wasting any :) |

Wired is always good for playing games like DUST online and you get better connection to the host server and not to mention you get better download speeds as opposed to WIFI . i would go with wired but for those that can't will have to deal with a slight lag spike along the way here or their . |

Its not just the way you get the connection but other things to.
wired is best in home its direct wireless need encrypting /sending/recieving/ decrypting
also depends on the hardware in the telephone exchanges, the wire quality entering home/inhome how many others are on that same line ie: street wise. the cable is a long line with others joining it so someone closer to exchange gets a better signal, the less distance the data travels and is/or boosted |

I used my Droid4 wireless hotspot and it did pretty good. Still having issues getting my shared router to work, it just reboots and kicks everyone off the router when I try to join a match.
6GB date limit per month but I can download the updates over the router and play via the phone (surprisingly gaming doesn't eat up as much as you would think).
EDIT: Should not that in all things, wired tends to be more reliable. If at all possible a hard line is the way to go, not just a paranoid security sense but because its a bit more "plug and play" |
