Did a topic search and didn't see anything like this, so:
When I edit a fitting (like the starter scout, for instance) with an empty slot (no default item), I don't see any indication of the types of items that can be placed in that slot.
Short of going to the marketplace and buying one of everything, I can't see any way to get a solid idea of what particular slots are meant for.
Is there anything that can be done to make this clearer? At the very least, it would help if the go-to-market option took you directly to a listing of approriate items. |

High slots will have to dashes in them (- -). On the market high slot items will have two dashes next to them. Low slot items have one dash. Grenades currently use that same symbol, which I assume is just a placeholder. Equipment is a square.
I forget what weapons and turrets use. |

If you press l1 when you are in the description menu for the weapon/item, it'll tell you what slot it goes in.
The ones at the top left are high powered , bottom left are weapons, bottom right are equipment, and top right are low powered |

Thanks guys, that's a big help. I will stand by my point, though, that it's not immediately obvious to idiot noobs. *points to self*

Nothing in New Eden is, bud. When I started out in EVE I was completely lost, had no idea how things worked. I tried to mine veldspar in low-sec, for god's sake! |

LOL.....I think just about every rookie pilot does that unless they're pre-warned ahead of time. |

This isn't justification. Just because EVE is an opaque mess for new players doesn't mean CCP should wash their hands of user-friendly features. Dude has a legitimate issue with fitting. |

And then he came to the forums and asked about it. A better answer would have been to RTFM, or pay attention to the tutorials, but whatever. He got there. And they're (supposedly) improving the tutorials next build. |
