So I specced out proto ships and they are still just as bad the militias. For survivability
Now flying is certainly fun once you get the hang of it. But they are certainly one way transport ships at best.
They are somewhat fragile if flown for there purpose of moving troops from one spot to another. The first problem lies in the landing and taking off. You are hugely vulnerable for these maneuvers.
And as fun as they might be to take pot shots at infantry and tanks they are just not hugely effective.
So the only real purpose I see this build is to be a mobile spawn point.
But we need a window in the bottom of the ship so troops can effectively choose their jump location.
Unless the drop ship gets some real love not sure what its intended purpose is going to be. |

So I finally got up to lv 3 in Caldari dropships to use the Eryx I've got.. But it can't compete with my Myron, it's pretty sad..
Dropships atm seem pretty messed up, I mean not only are they fragile things that can be 1-hitted by a Forge Gun, insta smashed by a Blaster installation or 3 hits of swarms (Which believe me, is very easy to do.), their stats are utter ****. I would love to use them for the purpose of going in, dropping people off at objective and then retreating back towards another spawn, but the fact I can't even do that, or get points for people cloning in on my ship is really annoying.
All I do now is fly as high as possible with my Gunner (Pignaut) and let him fire down on everyone in an ambush map, usually goes well. |

Dropships are missing a lot of the capabilities they'll eventually have. I suspect that's why a Myron with an mCRU will have better eHP and damage than an Eryx.
I haven't had a chance to do any proper combat flying (my gunner has an exercise going on irl) so I've been practicing my ground-level flying. Success varies, but then I'm doing my practice flights in a Viper. They're not exactly built to last.
I've certainly never been one-shotted by a Forge.
I just want to be ready for transport assist points in the next build. |

Dropships are currently being used as a gunship. This is not it's intended role, or it'd have more weaponry. They are however the best way to redeploy an organised group. Our groups are a little small to fill the Dropships. Regarding landing? Don't do it. Fly low enough and have people jump in/out.

I tried to land last night when all my shields were gone so I could repair my armor, very light touchdown and BOOM... I was pissed

Did you know if you land you dropship next to a supply depot it repairs the dropships armour, but it has to be fully landed and quite close |

If you use the modules well it can be a great troop transport. If you want a gunship, stick to the Myron or Grimsnes. Later on, with cloaking, scanners and equipment like that, the Logistics dropships will be invaluable. |

Currently dropships are pointless. They can't do anything two free LAVs can do. They're easily shot down and relatively expensive, why bother |

LAVs won't be free forever. Eventually, the maps will get quite a bit bigger than they are now. At that point, dropships would be okay. Right now, they're decent-ish for harassment of ground targets and putting people on the roofs of structures, but otherwise, yeah, their mobility is a bit unimpressive in these claustrophobic maps. |
