even if you have your troops rally around YOU.... just lay down some kind of objective so your team can actually move as one kinda sorta..... i love the squad leader function.... overview map is extremely slow and buggy..... but c'mon squad leader... dont let the troopers down |

It's a bummer to be squad leader and a vehicle pilot. I tend to pass off leadership to someone else and just pray to god that they aren't COMPLETELY incompetent. There is NO way I'm climbing out of my vehicle to issue an order or drop an OB, just so some idiot can steal my vehicle and get it exploded.

You know part of the problem is the lack of instruction on how to be a proper SL (Squad Leader), and another problem is the lack of anouncement on who is squad leader. Sometimes you do not get the war room, and you are just thrust into the game without knowing unless you know how to look for it. Overall when it comes to the CoC (Chain of Command) Dust514 needs a lot of work. A lot of work. So instead of complaining to people to be a better squad leader, how about you try voicing your concerns about what the real problem(s) are. Mmkay? |

Yep, an indicator that you are squad leader is a must. I'm a (fairly) competent squad leader and sometimes i just flat out don't realize i'm leading. Whoops!
MAG's squad list system was perfect. In the corner of the screen was a small list that showed the names of the people in your squad, an indicator beside the squad leader's name, indicator if a member needed a medic, and the time countdown to next respawn of each member. All of that is crucial information. If the window was too distracting to you you could press a button to collapse it. I'm not a total MAG fanboy. The fact is that system i describe was perfect. You have every vital piece of info you need at a glance.
Also, It's really not beneficial to be leader as i always seem to get less SP and less ISK than my squad. That shouldn't be. As leader I spend more time fiddling with placing orders than i do hacking or killing. That's to be expected with anyone in a position of leadership (to not work so hard physically), but usually they get a much higher pay grade than the grunts do. The leader should be rewarded far more so that he actually wants to be leader and wants to do it well. Currently players either pass it off like a hot potato or just ignore the fact they are leader entirely. ::facepalm:: |

I would be well happy to be squad leader. But then I die a lot so it might not be a good lifestyle choice for everybody. |

I would not call it perfect, but considering other games and how they implemented these features -- I'd say MAG is as close as you can get to being solid and noteworthy. As for having trouble acquiring points as a squad leader; I'd say it just takes time to get used to the flow being a squad leader. If Dust514 can fix these issues and institue a proper chain of command then I can see peeople flourishing and acquiring skill points. In MAG I had no problem obtaining kills and points as a squad leader, or above. Dust514 needs a lot of work though. Proper tutorials on how to use different modules, or equipment. How to use your squad leader commands, and how to call forth implacements or support. The list goes on, but fact remains MAG had this and it helped. Even if it was basic it did help a bit. Also putting in place priority would be nice. Players with points and a mic on should get positions first. As they did for (again) in MAG.
Not that I like bringing up MAG for examples, but the point is there is a lot to be salvaged and looked upon as what they did both right and wrong. Dust514 and CCP can learn a lot from that game and it's deceased developer. Not that Zipper did not deserve it's death. They screwed the pooch twice this generation alone. Not even counting how bad SOCOM3 was compared to it's predecessors. Anyway.. |

Agreed. It's known that alot of us MAG players have moved to DUST and i do hate when people on the forums say " DUST should be more like [insert favorite game here]" But the fact remains there are legitimate aspects of MAG that would lend themselves well to DUST since both games strive to value and reward leadership and teamwork. MAG wasn't perfect by any stretch, but alot of things worked very well. If MAG never existed i would likely recommend the same features anyway, it's just that MAG did exist and implemented alot of useful features that you can easily point to and say "do it like that, it works". |

Found the below in the manual, which might help those who are squad leaders or care to be:
http://dust.ccpgamescdn.com/Dust514/client-text/DUSTmanual.html
SQUAD MANAGEMENT
Once you are in the War Room you can access the squad management menu by pressing the START button or via the NeoCom under the Social tab and activate the CHAT option. From here, you can select available squads to join by highlighting the TEAM tab and then your character. Press the X button to bring up additional menu options such as joining another squad or to create a new squad.
Highlight the SQUAD tab to bring up additional menu options in order to manage your squad. From here, you can select a new squad leader, view additional info on a squad member, add other players to your contact list, or block another player.
Once you are in battle you can also activate the squad command menu if you are the squad leader. To access the squad command menu, press the R2 button to bring up the weapon switch window. Use the left analogue stick to select the squad menu icon to bring up the squad command menu. From the squad command menu you can give attack, defend, or rally orders to your squad by selecting the objective you wish to move your squad to. |

A little encouragement for squad leaders-
-if you hold R2 and press R3, you don't have to open the map to give orders -when your squad seems to be following what you say to do (not completely sure how it works) you get 25 WP for "squad leader commission" every minute of so. I mainly noticed it when I set up a point to defend, and a bunch of people camped there. |

Man, that war room is for squad leaders? I just thought it was random, I wonder just how many times I have been squad leader cluelessly and never done *anything*. There seriously needs to be some sort of squad leader tutorial besides the bits of info in the manual.. |

Infantry platoon and squad leaders must be tacticians. They cannot rely on a book to solve tactical problems. They must understand and use initiative in accomplishing the mission. This means that they must know how to analyze the situation quickly and make decisions rapidly in light of the commander's intent. They must be prepared to take independent action if necessary. The art of making sound decisions quickly lies in the knowledge of tactics, the estimate process, and platoon and squad techniques and procedures. The skills required of infantry leaders include physical toughness, technical knowledge, mental agility, and a firm grasp of how to motivate soldiers to fight on in the face of adversity. |

I wish you could issue a defend order anywhere, not just on objectives. It would be nice to tell my squad to hunker down in any given area, and get points for it. Guess that's a balancing thing, or some ****. |

I would agree to the above, but first and foremost is the knowledge of what buttons to push and the communication of what squad you are in/who is the leader. Part of this could be accomplished in the initial spawn screen after you make your drop selection.
Edit: It would also be nice to spawn on your leader. Otherwise, you may find yourself dropping into the middle of a sh*t storm with no time to check your squad posting. |
