Because have them disappear like what just ruins any communication that the game could have since everyone starts off with voice chat off. It need to be on so everyone can see if someone is trying to call out, or ask for help for something. with it the way it is, all the players that do not have a mic are literally mute.
Make them visible when in a battle.
They don't take up a lot of room on the HUD, so why not? |

I disagree with the boxes, but having a chat box in the corner at either side on the top, maybe even the option for more than one box would be amazing, and definitely help communication. |

Sorry, to tell you this. But, in Fleet/Big Dust Battles everyone can't be on voice comms, chat is needed.
+1 for a translucent chat window when we are in battle. I have suggested this many times, I hope it gets included. |

Some sort of chat is needed. I don't want 15 blinking boxes down the right hand side of my screen in a fight though. |

We desperately need 2 things.
VOICE COMMS Most importantly, we need a visual indicator so we can see who is talking, AND so we can tell if our mike is working. CCP's primary design goal is emergent player-driven teamplay, and the absence of talk indicators is a hard nerf of the social(and tactical!) aspect of the game. It works against their implementation of the UVT.
The indicator should be visible in the hud on or over individual players AND in a transparent, toggleable squad/team window.
This is a feature that has been asked for many times, and has virtually universal approval from the beta testers.
TEXT COMMS Also very important is a toggleable transparent chat window. CCP knows that it is a must-have tool for large group coordination. It needs to be able to handle Commander-customizable cross-corp communication for large fleet/foot operations.
CCP needs to make the working assumption that their PS3 playerbase is restricted to communications that happen through the DUST client and nothing else. They also need to keep in mind that these communications have to take place in the middle of combat - the system needs to be ultra-slick and unobtrusive at the same time.
I'm sure CCP have considered this, and I'm not ready to throw a hissy-fit until we see what they implement with player-corps. I suspect it will be pretty good on the communications front.
TBH, though, these communication tools are fundamental to what they are trying to achieve in DUST, and we should have seen the talk indicators in-game a long time ago. |

If any chat channel receives a message, it should show up as a transparent box, just like when they start blinking in your merc quarters. Very useful for randoms I.e "team chat : Everyone take A&B let enemy have C." Now the whole team knows what to do. Mics or not. I'm still a bit baffled as to the UVT and making custom channels, because you can't be in 2 channels (command chat & squad chat) at the same time to my knowledge. You have to keep switching from channel to channel... MAG did it better, let's hope CCP implement a similar system in game. |
