I just started playing the beta today and I suck. Which is strange, because I usually rock at TPS/FPS games. I know this game is not all about shooting, but I have no idea what to do. Can any1 please give me some pointers? Thanks. Much appreciated. Also, if I want my character to have a specific skill, can I purchase the skill, or do I have to create a new character slot? |

First tip--and don't skip this--is read the manual.

You will have to be more specific on what pointers you want.
You can purchase skill books and then use SP earned in matches to skill up in what ever skills you have available. If a skill has an X by it press triangle over it and look up its attributes to learn what skills you will need to gain access to it.
Only advice I have for you right now is just try to tryout different classes and get a feel for what you like before you dedicate yourself to it. |

Because IDK much about the races and blood types. But in other shooters, I am normaly a scout. Unless of course I felt like blowing something up. Then I just pick up the big guns. That's why I like playing uncharted, because you can change your gun mid battle. And you don't get all mixed up. |

I am talking about dropsuit type and gun type to start out then mess around with different modules and equipment. You can go into the militia gear section of the market and buy one of everything. Militia items don't run out so you will always have them instock and you won't have to invest any skill points to use them. The gear is weak but once you get a feel for the game play you shouldn't have to much trouble.
If your planning to go into scout remember to never stop strafing |

I'm not sure what you've already done but here's something that may help:
1. Make your own fits, the default ones are craptastic you can do better even with all militia gear.
2. You'll probably want to start out by buying several militia gear items, they're a one time purchase thing so that's always nice. There are some militia items that you don't start out with.
3. I think it would be best to focus on passive skills, skills that improve your character without having to spend isk like assault rifle operation or sharpshooter and so on.
4. Look at the radar often, it really holds a players hand in this game. Just by seeing an enemy on your screen they're lit up as a chevron and on the radar of the rest of your team for a few seconds.
5. Shooting from the hip with breach variation weapons is pretty effective, however I find that the breach assault rifle was over nerfed. I would recommend going with the basic one, kills much faster and has better range it seems. Shooting from the hip is very effective in this game, you'll get used to knowing when its time for ADS though.
6. Scout is a great suit because of how quickly you can strafe and run around, easy to retreat from most enemies. While it has low EHP and less slots in comparison to the other suits the flawed hit detection and your ability to strafe should make you quite deadly and hard to kill in most infantry vs infantry cases. If you end up not liking it, assault is a good secondary choice I think.
7. You can change your fittings up while in battle, you'll have to do so at supply depots though.
8. I would recommend making an assault fitting using all militia gear and a militia AV for until you get trained into some AV. At times matches can get very LAV (Jeep) heavy, just a bunch of people trying to get roadkills with their free LAV usually. If it's a free one you can blow one up in one volley with the swarm launcher, netting you some good SP/ISK and 1-3 kills. You'll also want one to help out against tanks, though the militia AV is quite pathetic against marauders.
9. AV grenades home onto vehicles, but you need to throw them somewhat near them. They will explode on impact. I've been able to destroy LAVs with 1-2 basic AV grenades.
10. Shield vehicles are weak against forge gun and flux grenades are great at getting rid of the shield portion of their health, though I hear they're buggy and sometimes don't work. Armor vehicles are weak against explosive damage like swarm launchers and basic AV grenades.
11. Try to stick with your team as much as possible, people seem to be a lot more into blob warfare in this build which I think is a welcome change. It's pretty nice seeing people stick together and work as a team. You can get some nice points if you carry a nanohive and stick with the pack, it's nice getting 50+ points from supplying your teammates and getting your ammo back. There are many ways to support the team though, that's just my preferred method at the moment.
12. You can have multiple characters on one account and they will all gain SP passively, so the sooner you make your other 2 characters the better. This could be nice if you want to explore other possibilities, you could have a guy that's focused on being a foot soldier that's focused on killing/hacking objectives, another that's focused on AV, and another focused on operating vehicles.
13. Try to find people to squad with, it will make the game much easier.
14. If you do go and try operating tanks I would have a fitting with a missile launcher and another with a railgun. Railgun is great for taking out other vehicles but pretty bad at taking down infantry, while the missile launcher has some amazing area damage and makes it pretty easy (very easy actually, IMHO) to kill infantry.
15. I'm sure you know this already but don't stand in front of tanks. I'm always trying to stay behind cover and make sure they don't see me.
16. If you're getting zerged (overwhelmed by numbers) backtrack a bit and find a good position to take cover at and prepare to take down one or two enemies and fall back again until the numbers have dwindled a bit. Most people will see you and think that they gotta beat their team to the kill, this is the weakness of most teams I've faced.. won some 8 vs 1's yesterday because they kept sprinting at me 1 by 1 up a hill where I was at lol, I would kill one, back off, regen shields, pop back up, kill another, rinse and repeat. Works like a charm.
17. Don't be a douchebag, if you call in a LAV at the beginning of the match go by some teammates and see if they want a ride. Extra fire power is always good, and that person or two might save ur ass later.
18. Strafe like your life depends on it, because it does. Once you get good at strafing and counteracting your left analog stick with your right you should be good to go against most players, try to be unpredictable but while keeping your aim steadied on the target.
19. Try to have a fitting that has a drop uplink in it. That way if your team starts to get pushed back to their spawn and gets trapped you can drop a spawn point outside of that area and turn things around.. hopefully.
20. Type II suits seem to be the same as the standard ones except it's for shield fit players. I personally prefer going with shield tanking because it allows me to keep my movement speed, armor plates slow you down. 2x armor repairs are nice to have but can be costly, I got a few fittings where I run 1 rep and 1 armor plate because of CPU/PG restrictions.
May add more later if needed. |

Ignore all default stuff. Because it is as it is by default, does not say anything about it. Aside from the logistics, that is.
The heavy shouldn't be using swarm launchers The scout is just as good with Sidearms, AR's, and swarms, as it is with snipers. (Strafing) Assaults can be used as a support as well, without too many downsides. Blasters are garbage, never use them. Missile launchers are great for AV and Anti infantry Railguns are a bit better for AV. Dropships are amazing, discard what anyone else tells you on here, or what experience you may have had in one.

Not that I know of. It impedes my aiming, when I have it on. |

Stay with other players. If you run solo you are dead. If you are looking for some people to join a squad, join the chat channel LFSquad. There are a lot of people who want to support you. |

Unless you're a scout with an SMG. Then you're fine going solo. |
