i've been looking forward to dust 514 for a long, long time now. When i finally got my beta acceptation mail past thursday i couldn't wait to jump in. Unfortunately i couldn't play untill today and this is my first impression: installation was straightforward.
I went to the playstation store, entered my beta code and swiftly started downloading the 2-ish gig game. That took long enough (about half an hour to 45 minutes) launched it made and started to create my character. Now I did play eve online for a year or 2 (quite a long time ago already though) and I can imagine that the entire race choosing thing can be pretty overwhelming for a newcomer. Even more so because the choice menu does not give you any hard numbers on what exactly your choice will influence. Sure, it gives you a nice story to read about each race and whatnot but nothing that makes it easy to compare. Will it give you different starter equipment? Different skills (if the new player is already accustomed to eve online's skill system)? Different stats? None of that is relayed through the initial menu.
Obviously it doesn't matter much, everyone can train up to any piece of equipment or any vehicle but still...
Now onto the player's hq. I can't really say anything about this, it's pretty intuitive. You can walk around pretty much like you walk around in your captain's quarters of eve online pilots. I do find that the camera is annoyingly close to the player, it takes up most of my tv making it just that tad bit more irritating than it should be. Other than that you get accustomed to it pretty quickly.
So I wanted a quick match, selected the "instant battle" and got thrown into a random match with some other random players. It loads, i select a spawn point and a load out and start running. At this point it's all pretty standard fps stuff. You have your weapons and run around shooting people. Though i must say that not much teamwork was going on in the one round i could play, everyone was scattered over the map lone wolfing. Unfortunately i had to stop this game before it ended.
Half an hour later i descided to load up a new match. It loads and i try to select a load out again. But what's this? All my load outs are "invalid"? what does that even mean? I spend a couple of minutes searching around, meanwhile getting shouted at by the system that "i have an obligation to get out there and fight" and whatnot. I have no clue what's going on. Why can't i select any of my outfits? The tutorial system, which had been really helpfull up till then, remains silent. Confused i go into the fitting screen, it says something about item not in stock or something but i have no idea what item/items or what i'm supposed to do. I select the fitting i want to spawn in and choose restock. A small menu pops up where i can select some value of which i have again no idea what it does. It can be set anywhere from 1 to 100 though it does not change the cost. I kept ******* around confused, all the while getting shouted at by the system.
After a couple of minutes i heard a "this is your last warning soldier! join the fight or be replaced!" warning message, and indeed a few seconds later i got kicked. What the hell did i do wrong? why couldn't i spawn? (mind you this is my first time playing and that was pretty confusing imo)
No biggie i thought, i'll try to look around my player's quarters. Maybe i forgot something? I search around the menus and suddenly i think about my skills. i'm not training any. so i go into my skill training menu and see that i have quite a few "unallocated skillpoints", i scroll down untill i find a suitable skill to level up. Select it, press "level up" and... nothing. Some loading circle appears as if it's processing something but it doesn't do anything. I couldn't cancel the action, none of the buttons did anything. Though the playstation hadn't frozen because my skillpoints kept updating and the circle animation was still running.
I waited 2 minutes before i got fed up and shut the system down. Which confirmed that it wasn't the playstation that froze, i could press the playstation button and shut it down using the controller.
conclusion: So far i still don't know why i couldn't spawn and i also don't know what caused the game to bug out like that. Other than that, the one round i did manage to (partially) play was fun. I liked the hud and the weapons, I got slaughtered but it entertained me. |

Thats one big wall of text mate makes it harder to read, OK thanks it aint anymore
Basicly what you described there is a known bug and is hope fully been worked on when ever the invalid bug comes up it sets all your suits to have zero runs availible but also seems to cause a freeze on the follow up load weater it be another match or the skill point that you had there when ever invalid bug happens something has gone wrong and its time to restart or take a break.
Welcome to DUST iam fairly certain if you stay with it it wont be last time you see that |

i did add paragraphs, i edited my post. At least it shows up to me as having paragraphs. The original text had them too, then the forum ****** up something and i couldn't post it.
Loaded in one of the saves (which still showed up as having paragraphs in the editor) and posted it. Somehow it turned into on giant wall of text when posting.
If it's a known bug then there's not much that can be done about it :) Thanks for the info. |

There is a sticky in the bugs forum about it. The post has instructions for a special way to report it so we can help CCP squash it |

perhaps because the old population was getting low? Perhaps they moved on to stress testing their servers more? (if they're not running dust on a separate test server much like sisi)
In any case, here's a bit more feedback.
1. teamwork.
Pretty much non-existant it would seem. There doesn't seem to be any form of clear "order giving" or backing up your teammates. Ther's no commander or squad leader who can give support to you and your team. Or perhaps there is, in which case it isn't shown very clearly. I have played about 5 or 6 rounds and i never knew who the squadleader/commander was...
So far it's been spawn => run towards enemies => kill some => get killed => respawn
Sure i've run into an occasional ammo hub thingy and sometimes you do find yourself running in the same general direction as another player but as far as real teamwork goes there's not much happening. Everyone's playing for themselves.
This is also the first game where i haven't been revived a single time in all the rounds i've played. It made me wonder why you got the "call for help" option, nobody came to my aid. Eventually i just gave up on waiting and respawned as soon as i could.
I did try playing as the support guy, deploying a ammo hub near teammates but the game didn't seem to reward me for it. Which would immediately explain why nobody tries to support their teammates, it's simply not worth it.
Doing so also caused me to die rather quickly, which eventually made me switch back to the assault kit so i could at least kill some baddies.
This can be led back to a lack of communication. Why not have a "shout" menu, like battlefield, left 4 dead,.. etc. have? With basic commands like "need a medic", need ammo, attack, pull back,... etc. Additionally a squad leader/commander (if it exists) could tag one target to attack/defend which would show up in a different color on your hud.
If you ask me, this would already help alot.
2. spawning
just one thing: AAARGHH SPAWNCAMPING!
Seriously though, how many times haven't i spawned to find myself getting instantly shot at by one (or even multiple) enemies. Or found myself surrounded by enemies who are just sniping down any player who dares to come out of hiding. This is especially annoying in the ambush gametype (at least i think it's the ambush gametype) where the spawns are chosen by the system.
3. overall balance
One round i'm doing pretty well (and i mean pretty well for someone who hasn't played ANY online shooters on a console before), getting a kdr of somewhere in between 1 and 2. The next round i'm being obliterated, probably because of my lack of experience in this game and with console shooters in general.
The weapons are nice, i guess. I haven't had the chance to try any other than the ones you get with your starter kits and so far i haven't met alot of players who are using other weapons themselves. That or i just can't see/feel the difference.
4. the sniper
I tried it and sucked with it. Badly.
To be expected, i can't hit much (without a stroke of luck) with my assault rifle let alone with a single shot, high caliber siper rifle. Though i did find the scope to move around quite alot when zoomed in. I was standing up so that might influence it but don't you guys think its a bit overly exaggerated?
I mean, i can zoom in with my assault rifle and it's dead still. yet i can't hold up a sniper rifle without it moving around like i'm standing on a boat in the middle of a storm?
5. vehicles
I've been crushed by them (with them being the lav's) a couple of times without me even noticing them coming. Normally i'm pretty good at hearing stuff coming at me in other games and dodging them but in dust it seems as if they don't even have an engine? It confused me pretty badly the first time i got hit. I didn't see anyone on the mini map and i wasn't out in the open.
Just running along when, without warning, BAM! you're dead.
6. the hud and the enemy tagging system
I just don't know how it works. Those red triangles pop up randomly, at first i thought it was because i (or a teammate) had a direct line of sight but then i started seeing enemies through walls and such without a friendly close to me.
It made it alot harder to go with the tactical approach. 9/10 they would just know where i was coming from. perhaps i had just bad luck but i think it's again a bit too much. You show up too easily and for too long on the opponent's hud. IMO.
7. the skill system
Perhaps it was a bug but i bought a new skillbook and tried to "inject" it into my character much like you do in even online but that didn't happen.
The game doesn't prompt you if you want to injec the sb directly when buying it. I also couldn't inject it from the asset menu Nor could i find it when searching under my "current skills" tab.
I finally managed to find it by going to the "all skills" tab, scrolling down alot untill i found the skill i had bought, and there i could finally inject it.
Why can't you just do it from your assets menu? Or even better, why doesn't the game ask you if you want to use it immediately? It's a bit of a hassle when i have to look through the "all skills" tab everytime i get myself a new skillbook.
To summorize:
- this game needs to reward teamplay more - the spawn system could use some tweaking - the weapons are nice, at least so far i haven't had the feeling that i got obliterated because of some overpowered weapon - the sniper's scope moves around too much - up the engine noice from LAV's - enemies show up too easy and for too long on your hud, destroying close range tactics - make injecting new skillbooks less annoying. |

- this game needs to reward teamplay more It sort of does. In matches where my team works as a unit we ALWAYS win.
- the spawn system could use some tweaking You can equip a deployable limited use spawn point. I have not used this yet but plan to in the future.
- the weapons are nice, at least so far i haven't had the feeling that i got obliterated because of some overpowered weapon /agree
- the sniper's scope moves around too much I don't snipe but my wife says that skills help with this.
- up the engine noice from LAV's If you keep an eye on your HUD. you can usually see them coming a long way off.
- enemies show up too easy and for too long on your hud, destroying close range tactics Skills mitigate this.
- make injecting new skillbooks less annoying. /agree |

hmm, i guess it makes sense that skills would reduce the scope "sway" though i find it to be too much even for a new player who hasn't got those sb's yet. (assuming that with "skills" you mean sb's).
Even though skills might help i still think it's a bit too much. Just an IMHO though, it's not gamebreaking but it stood out to me. |

It appears to move around more because it is magnified in the same way that a paramecium appears to sprint across a slide under a microscope. If you have ever used a scope on a firearm in RL you know this to be true. The better the scope the harder it seems to stay on point.
It stood out to me as well but if you think of the battlefield as being 1000s of years in the future...god only knows what humans can dream up to kill each other with. |

For sniping you can crouch by pressing Triangle, the scope becomes way steadier. Just try to snipe behind cover, though, and don't stay in one sniping perch too long, you'll get counter-sniped or a ticked off Assault guy will track you down and shotgun you in the face. |

i'm aware that crouching will increase accuracy but even then it still stood out to me as exaggerated.
I don't really care that much about realism, i care about having fun :) |
