I'll agree, to a degree. When I started Dust, I was often lost as to determining the location of incoming fire. Often I would die without any clear indication of wtf just happened. It was jarring, to say the least. However, having played now for a while, I don't really notice it anymore. I've adapted. I admit that I will take damage and I simply can not find the source in the moment, but soon after death, and the adrenalin calms, I can piece things together and determine it was an airborne drop ship, sniper, or tank bombarding my area. Sure enough, on re-spawn I can trace back my location, and on a few hilltops over I'll see the culprit. My point is, though I would like a little more of an indication to damage (a kick-back, a stumble, whatever), I have adjusted and it's not as much of a bother lately.
On the other point of red in the peripheral (injury reference/bloody vignettes), one could make the argument that in BF your flesh is taking damage, thereby splattering blood into your view or what have you. Here, we're buried deep inside mobile dropsuits. If anything would visualize on damage, I think it should be a digitized flicker and/or static of sorts, perhaps like Robocop's initial bootup perspective. I do not, in that context, believe I would have any more of a suggestion as to the direction/source of incoming damage when it's just my overhead display shorting out for a moment. These suits are heavy. I would have indicators on my display to inform me of damage because technically, I may not really FEEL it as it's deflected by 1) shields and 2) armor 3) flesh? and at that point, it's too late! This seems logical.
I do think they need to adjust things somehow, though. Some have requested more of a physical response to incoming fire like a stumble. This might be enough. Perhaps the next build will have more detail.
Good luck exploring the game!

*edit* I'll add this after having read the previous reply that I did get confused a lot in my earlier games being killed and not really knowing why or where it came from. Using the mini-map as some point of reference I never saw the enemy icons of whoever it was shooting me from my left aft. It took a while to realize that enemy icons only pop up there when my team actually spots them in their view or I see them myself from my view. Now that I'm more aware of them, I'm able to use a bit more context clues to determine if the incoming fire is close to me (did his icon marker pop up in my mini-map?) or a possible sniper or vehicle in the distance (hm. no red icon on the mini-map, but I'm still getting hit from my left.... oh. sniper. change motion!). Hell, even now I still get a bit confused when Dropships are hovering above me blasting my camp. Like I said though, as I learn the realities of this game and all the possibilities (and limitations) of enemy damage dealers, my confusion lessens.
All the best of luck,
