Warhawk on PS3 eventually added a booster pack called 'Omega Dawn' some time after the game release that added a dropship. That dropship was indeed able to pick up friendly vehicles including jeeps and tanks. It was a hugely useful tool. The dropship did have a down-side though if you carried a vehicle, your ship would lose mobility, specifically lift and speed. I could see vehicle transport by drop ships being a possibility if there were proper trade offs (i.e. making the ship slower with a load being carried and having to compensate for added weight and the resulting changes in inertia). Additionally, a dropship pilot may be required to train certain specific skills and use specialty modules in order to carry vehicles, sacrificing something else such as shields, weaponry, or passenger capacity. Or perhaps an entirely new class of dropship specifically for this purpose with a higher price and skill level. There are many possibilities.
Dropping off troops behind enemy lines in one thing, but dropping off a tank changes everything. It especially helps against spawn camps. If you can get one dropship with a tank and a few guys out of the home base, you can regain a foothold. Sure, currently you can drop off a bunch of guys that could then call in a tank once on the ground, but it's risky. You may call it in and get killed before you get a chance to hop in. Plus you lose the element of surprise. The possibility of a dropship dropping vehicles ready to roll immediately may also keep the enemy at the objectives protecting them and discourage spawn camping altogether.
Though,in Warhawk, the tanks were not even close to as invulnerable as they are in Dust at the moment. ( I know, i know, there's fixes on the way to balance that better). You could easily solo a tank on foot (which i don't believe is realistic or fair at all), but they still shouldn't be able to drop in and single handedly kill half of a team and overtake a base themselves. Ground troops should have recourse if a tank gets dropped in unexpectedly.
I mainly focus on a tank, but LAVs would be helpful also.
At any rate, i agree, a dropship that could move vehicles around the battlefield would be a fantastic dynamic to add into Dust.
Now that i've finished this lengthy post, i almost feel as though CCP must already intend to implement this at some point. It just makes sense.
TL;DR: I agree, dropships should be able to carry vehicles. It's probably already in the works. That'll be awesome. The end. |

But how to test it? maybe get a squad together? I'm pretty sure you should be able to spawn a tank on top of a low building, fly the dropship down next to it, and then drive the tank out onto the top of the dropship. Then just take off!
Haha, we used to do this in Warhawk also. We'd hover the warhawk at the edge of a cliff and drive a jeep onto the wings. You could alternatively get a few ground troops on there if you wanted to. It was more of something fun to do in a boring game when you're demolishing the other team, not so much as a tactical advantage since it made it very difficult to fly and you had to move so slow you were a sitting duck for an enemy warhawk. Anyway, even if it is possible now, i don't know what happens to a tank if it falls from 1,000 Ft. and i bet a tanker doesn't want to find out either. [EDIT: I see you actually said a "low" building, but still, at low altitude you'd be swarm launcher bait. You'd need altitude to be effective]. It may be somewhat possible, but it won't necessarily be useful as a tactical possibility until it's legitimately made a feature. Else tanks will be raining down from above and bursting into flames upon impact with the ground.
Hey, here's an idea. Let's just skip the middle-man and make tanks that fly!
o, wait.
That's a dropship.
nevermind. |
