Let me preamble this by saying that I play a LOT of video games. I'm 32 years old, and I've been playing far too many games since I was around 5 and we got our first Atari system. I'm also predominantly a console player. I have 25 video game consoles hooked up down in my game room currently - though I do play the occasional PC title (LoL anyone!?) I don't only play FPS games, but I play them a good bit. I've played a lot of Halo 1, 2, 3, MW2, MW B.O., MW3 and now my FPS of choice is definitely BF3. It plays great - and Dust really looks like all the best elements of Halo, Battlefield and an RPG all rolled into one. This could easily be the last FPS I ever need to play - because it has it all. Well, almost...
The reason I bother saying all that, is because I want you know that I have a clue about what I'm saying when I say that the controls of Dust are really REALLY terrible. I'll elaborate.
Floaty is the word that is generally used when a game feels like this. The sticks feel like when you move your reticule, it's actually on a thin sheet of ice, and it glides. It doesn't feel tight, or well controlled. There were multiple times yesterday when I was playing that me and another player would literally dance around each other, going through TWO FULL CLIPS OF AMMO before one of us could land enough hits. It feels sloppy.
I'm sure if I were to play with a mouse, this would all go away - but a game who's sole medium is PS3 needs good controller input. It needs to FEEL good. That's the most important aspect of a FPS - does it feel "crunchy"? I had spent all Friday night playing BF3 with a group of my friends - then immediately Saturday morning logged on to Dust for the first time. I was in "FPS MODE" - ready to go! The concept of FPS controls is so ingrained in me that I can just pick up any FPS and immediately play it. Not so with Dust.
I tried turning off the 240hz on my tv, and kicked it back down to 60hz - which helped a very small amount, but not enough. I tried lowering my sensitivity to 1, and that didn't help either. Oh, the FIRST thing I did was turn on aim assist - which also didn't help. It's just floaty. I tried plugging some people from medium/long range with short controlled bursts from my assault rifle (like I do in almost every FPS I play, that's the style I use) and it was hopeless. By nudging the stick to get that subtle movement to track somebody far away, my reticule would just glide right past the enemy, coming to rest after I had already finished moving my stick.
I love everything I'm seeing about this game and its intentions. I want this game to succeed so bad - I can't even explain. I also want to be part of that. But if the controls don't get tightened up a LOT, I don't foresee that happening. Being free to play, maybe a few with mice will stick with it - but I don't see that creating the huge player base that would make this game so interesting.
TLDR: Controls are floaty on controller - please fix. : P |

a) you're playing a sniper and so reticle movement decay depends on your skill level b) judging by the length and nature of your post, you only recently started playing Dust, and even if you have lengthy FPS experience like most people in this forum, you would know every new FPS takes a while getting used to c) devs rarely read long posts - you should rather concisely try to explain your control issues in the feedback forum, and not in the general discussion section d) Welcome to the Dust514 beta my friend ;) |

I agree OP +1. While its hard to put into words the controls for Dust just feel off. Like you're not connected to your character. |

I agree, controls are just a bit... off
What might help (as it did for me), is to go into options and turn the sensitivity right down. Also if it isnt too taboo turn the aim assist on, i found it keeps you hitting for a second longer in a 1 on 1 in your face fight (i turned it straight off lol) |

Yes, I'm brand new - Saturday was my first day playing. I'm planning on playing as much as possible in the future to try and dig deeper into the game. I know that it's a VAST game, and even a month after starting, I'll still be learning new things - but man oh MAN are the controls rough. But keeping the reticule on somebody who's only 30 feet away shouldn't be all that hard for somebody with a good bit of FPS experience.
I'll keep at it though - this is the first time I've played a FPS on the PS3 (all my friends are 360 owners) so hopefully some of the issue is related to going from the 360 controller to the Dual Shock.
I'll pop on over to the feedback forum now... :P |

I absolutely know what you mean ;) Good call though, hang in there it's going to be a great game and simply put - fun to play. It's CCP's first stab at a shooter and as players we know our shooters well - there's much that remains to be done but you're now an essential part of it. And please join Crux Special Tasks, we want your skills!

Well, my buddy came over today and we played all day. I must say - the floaty controls are really really bad. Even after hours of playing, neither one of us ever felt like we had control over our character, at least not in comparison to every other FPS we've played. We tried sniping, shotguns (what a joke - do they even DO damage?) and assault rifles. Oh, and the occasional pistol.
Nothing really felt good or clean or crisp - everything felt floaty and glidy and kind of disjointed. My friend said he felt like an elephant on roller skates.
I'm not sure if this is anything that can be adjusted at this point in the game's development, but I know for sure that it's a deal breaker for at least two people. :P
I also messed around with vehicles a very very small amount, and found I had the same issues with those - the controls weren't tight or responsive at all. And I don't mean the handling per say - because different vehicles will handle differently, and some may skid around a lot, etc. What I mean is, they didn't respond well, and I never felt like I was in control of the vehicle. It was almost like my inputs were lagging by .1 second or something, it's difficult to explain why something feels "floaty".

Yeah, I kept hearing people complaining about the shotguns doing too much damage, and since I was having so much trouble with keeping my reticule on somebody - I decided to look into a shotgun, since it's more of a one-and-done sort of gun. I only used it for one game though. I would close to within about 10-15 feet (ish) of somebody, and open up. I'd hit them once and do about 25% of their shields. Then a second shot would take their shields to just below half - then they had me dead from their assault rifle.
Perhaps the range is just much MUCH closer than what I'm used to before the shotgun's damage is decent?
Also keep in mind, I was using the militia version. |
