First, let me preface this discussion by saying I do not expect CCP to begin working on, let alone accomplish, the following until at least a year or two after Dust's launch, maybe slightly longer. The goal is ambitious and requires more integration between Dust and Eve, as well as another look at Factional Warfare in order to work. What I'm going to propose has been briefly mentioned before in other threads; usually in topics relating to Ship boarding. I view the topics of station combat and ship boarding to be separate. Ship boarding is an "iffy" proposition that will take awhile to convince Eve Titan and SC pilots to accept. Station combat on the other hand seems to be more acceptable and should be a working goal for Dust. This is a massive undertaking and it needs to be done right. Quality work takes time and I believe CCP is more than capable of accomplishing this task. Please feel free to give feedback and brainstorm ideas. There's nothing wrong with being creative or thinking ahead.
Advanced Faction Warfare- Station and System Control
For those of you who don't play Eve and want a visual flyby of the stations, I provided a short video of just one of the half-dozen or so station variants for each empire. These are NPC stations, I can get Player Owned/Operated Station (POS) videos to post later. For now let's confine our discussion to Faction Warfare and leave Nullsec for another day.
The Stations
Click here if you want to see a list of the possible stations and limited data about them.
The videos shown are far from perfect but the best I could do with limited tools- just Fraps. The numbered modules could really be anything. I provide a possible use simply for brainstorming purposes and shouldn't be considered canon.
Amarr
Amarr Station Flyby This station is nearly 50km tall. Top down view
1. Central hub and hangar docking bay (attached at the bottom). 2. Station module 3. Possible construction/maintenance module attached to what looks like a large construction or repair bay. 4. Station module 5. Station module Modules 2, 4 and 5 could range from living quarters to cathedrals to slave holding pens. Be creative.
Gallente
Gallente Industrial Station Flyby The station itself appears to be 60km from end to end. Here's a Top-down view with a list of modules.
1. The hangar docking bay is located here, but since this module is so large it could also conceivably house living quarters and military barracks, etc. 2. A pavilion structure. maybe it holds restaurants and malls (This is a Gallente station after all) like on the Citadel in Mass Effect. 3. A curious structure. It looks to me like a park or possible agricultural module to grow food or maybe algae for bio fuel. Modules 4, 5, 6 and 7 appear to be various industrial modules like refineries and factories. Here's a closer pic of Module #3.
Minmatar
Matari Station Flyby
The station appears to be 40km in diameter. Top-down view
1. Hangar docking bay and main hub. 2. Repair/Construction bay. 3. Smaller hub above #1. Possibly administration or living quarters. 4. Possible cargo bay or living quarters. 5. Same as #4.
Caldari
Caldari Station Flyby This station is massive. It is around 100km from end to end. Top-down view.
1. Hangar docking bay. 2. The main body of the station. You can cram a lot of stuff in here from shopping malls and cargo holds to parks and living quarters. 3. Looks to be an industrial or corporate module. 4. It's a hard to see from the video and ... |

The Battlefield
I wanted to display the different stations and their building styles to illustrate how each battlefield would, and should, be different. The Gallente station is very modular and organized. One module leads to the next and while they are different sizes, they are all relatively on the same plane. The Amarr station is, as we say in Eve, VERTICAL! Instead of having round, circular, indoor battlefields, you would encounter stacked rooms. Perhaps these rooms are connected by winding stairways, halls, elevators and choke points. The battle would be different depending on which floor you were on.
Just like in skirmish maps, consoles could be placed for control. (I only ask that instead of A, B and C, we name the consoles things like "Life Support Shutdown Override and Reactor Control System. Granted, that's hard to cram on a console screen but I'm sure CCP can find a way)
The How
Obviously it's up to CCP how they'd intend to integrate station combat in Dust and Eve. That said, I think there's much room for speculation and brainstorming. The following is just a simplistic idea and needs to be refined into something useable.
Two possible ways combat on a station could occur. Raiding and Full Assault.
1. Raiding
This is a smash and grab Op. You and your team insert into one of the modules and fight the defenders for control. The reward is LP, Isk and salvage. Get in, get out. No real lasting effects other than bragging rights and a fatter wallet. Maybe a small percentage of control for your empire if you beat the defenders.
2. Full Assault
This is War. The system is being contested and there is a fleet of ships outside trying to win the system for their empire. Every module is up for grabs. Like before, the reward is LP, Isk, and salvage; but wrestling control over the station helps determine the sovereignty of that system. |

PvE
Incursions. Contested systems could have their stations invaded by Sansha's forces and your squad has to clean them out.
Or you can invade one of Sansha's stations yourself.'
Pirate defense etc. All the pirate factions love pissing off the empires. Fight them off or join in with them.
Ideas
There is almost no limit to where a battle could occur in a station and so that leaves a lot of options for battlefields.
Imagine a cargohold with crates, boxes and items stacked floor to ceiling. There's barely enough room for a heavy to squeeze in between the railroad-car sized boxes and containers.
A battle could break out in a construction or maintenance bay. Half-completed cruiser and battleship hulls hang in the air.
A Caldari shopping mall is a good place to lose your isk, but even easier to lose your life. Shot up Quafe advertisements shoot sparks and broken glass crunches under your boots while you fight from store to store.
An Amarr monastery. Slave pens. A minmatar duct-tape factory...

I'm fairly certain that this won't be the case. The stations in Eve are MASSIVE. They just don't really look like it because of the size relative to your ship.
I mean those suckers can fit an entire carrier in there? Yeah, I think one floor would suffice for an entire battle. I forget how long the carriers are on their axis, but if you wanted to compare a person to the size of it, you wouldn't even be able to see a person they'd be so small... |

What I mean is, the battlefields could be vertically oriented in some stations as opposed to a planar orientations. Imagine if A was 300 feet above you and C was 400 feet below. You could just make large rooms but then the fights would lack any distinction apart from the color of paint on the walls. With that many cubic meters, you would have to limit where the battles took place, otherwise you'd have a free roam from hell. |
