First of all I would like to say that I think DUST has a lot of potential. As long as the developers have proper feedback and intelligently constructed criticism and advice, this could turn into a very successful game.
I love flying. I've had some real life experience with piloting small aircraft and when I found out about the dropships in DUST I was immediately excited. With the hope of improving on the design, I would like to suggest some things about the flight controls.
(I would like to state that this is in mind for a console controller or gamepad, not a keyboard/mouse configuration)
I think handeling could be improved by moving pitch and roll controls onto one joystick (toggle), just like a real aircraft (ie: moving the right joystick to the right rolls the dropship to the right, left to the left, and pulling back on the joystick would pitch the aircraft's nose upward while forward would push it towards the ground. The yaw would be controlled like standard rudder pedals with the R2 and L2 controls moving the craft right and left, respectively. L1 could be used for lowering the throttle while R1 would be used for increasing the throttle.
In addition, I think a control that automatically levels out the vehicle would be called for. Sometimes the controls are at present so awkward to use that after fumbling around the dropship is flipped end over end before unceremoniously slammed into the ground.
It's just an idea, and maybe another idea the developers could toss around is for players to adjust and set the controls themselves in order to make their experience more personal as well as more comfortable. |

Pitch and roll are together right now on the left stick in standard and right in southpaw. Yaw is the horizontal movement of the other stick. You may be confusing the camera shift of the vertical movement of the yaw stick with pitch. If you mess with camera movement early on you will very likely lose spatial orientation and crash.
Keep in mind that your fixed wing experience will be a liability at first because you have NO wing! You cannot trade speed for altitude as you are accustomed. The only way to gain altitude is to increase throttle. Pulling will only slow forward progress and cause further sink due to redirection of some of your thrust. All turns are skidded
Dropships fly like the lunar lander, not an airplane.
I am currently editing a post entitled "Dropship Flight School" going over this and many other concepts and I hope to post some time tomorrow. |

Ok, I understand, and you're right, my own experience was kind of a detriment. I guess in theory it flies a little more like a helicopter, still, they really do need a flight tutorial. I've put some more practice into it and I am getting the hang of it but I think it couldn't hurt for a few more tweeks to be made.
I still think an automatic level-out 'button' would help a lot of beginners out (myself included). |
