If you would like some unique weapons/equipment etc. you can purchase with AUR (real money converted). Purchased items will not give the purchaser an advantage over others as you can get = or > items ingame (free to you). Purchasing items sometimes allows you to get better weapons/items with less playing time/SP (no more than a few days worth). You can still win/be the best ever without paying any money.

My guess, is that paying will in the end get you the best gear. I'm hopeful that I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised.

If you want that stuff you can buy it, If not no need. Game is free to play. Was free to play. Will be free to play.

The item market will be player driven. The BPOs available with the merc pack are decent starting gear but do not in any way trump player skill. Dragonfly Scout suit has some tweaks and you probably won't be able to sell it but it is far from a winning advantage. If you keep an eye on your salvage you are already getting some of "the best gear" in matches as it is. Some players have been salvaging AUR items.

I've got a couple of 'Officer' weapons from salvage, these cannot be bought for isk or AUR at the minute and are above prototype specs, but as Aighun said, when the market goes live I'll be able to sell them for millions of isk each and sell AUR items for 100s of thousands of isk. The point being if you don't want to pay real money for the "pay to win" items then simply pay for them with isk when people sell them.

But it'll be free to download otherwise.
