Well, at least some of the reasons why.
Recent press on DUST 514 has been kind of disheartening. And sometimes beta testing the game and trying to keep a positive outlook while standing up for my own particular views on the forums feels like a dream where I am walking through sand and the harder you try to move the more difficult it becomes and after an endless amount of time I look around me only to find I am in the exact same place and haven't moved more than a few inches. Sometimes the whole thing can be very discouraging.
But today I read the Eurogamer review of the PC release, Prepare to Die Edition, of Dark Souls. It was somehow uplifting and reminded me of why I like some of the games that I do. There are a lot of great passages and quotable lines. Among them:
"This is one of the few games that treats you like an intelligent being."
I like a game that doesn't treat me like I'm a dumbass. I would go so far as to say I am looking for a game that doesn't really treat me any particular way at all. A game that is just there for me to play and make of it what I will.
At the science fiction end of the spectrum...

If i were a d*ck i would say ITS A BETA but I'm not so here's my outlook on your post. You said that dust hasn't gone a long way......... I would say it has if you look at gameplay from the eve fanfest you will immediately notice improvement. With that said i still think this game has a long way to go......, although i think ccp is probably already playing on a new build. |

after a quick flick thru the recent posts on general, i'd have to say that I'm happy to play DUST, even more so when all those looking for a quick fix shallow point and click "lookit me ima hero" game flee to safer waters.
Don't get me wrong... DUST is boring me to hell right now, I've played most of the maps (found a new one last night :D ), between 3 characters i've gotten about 4.5million SP, (:P yes thats not much....)
But then I've played EVE, sure it wasnt for long (couple months really), I can see where the combat system is going because i've seen it before. I watch the retreads in their swanky tanks, and dream of the day ill drain their cap and call in the rest of the AV squad, I look to the skies and see people sitting their dropships on roofs like overly expensive missile turrets, and i really hope for those fighters we have been promised.
I have heard that some Corps and Alliances arent interested in what DUST will bring to EVE. Fair enough, but then I'm sure that the more warlike Alliances like Goons will relish the chance to strip assets off of those players.
I'm happy that people don't like this game. After spending much time as a gamer (all the way from space invaders table top when i was 4 y/old), playing old school, new school, MMO... you can't help but notice the diversity of the player base. Not everyone will like something.
I cannot see why CCP should try to cater to people who do not like their games. CCP has made its reputation (after a shakey start) by listening to its player base.
If this game isnt for you, thats OK! Find something that is!!
If you think this game might be for you, look into it a little more, see if it might be, ask questions, get answers, give feedback and make friends/enemies ... DUST if it makes release...will be sitting along side EVE for some time,
TLDR? DUST is not a quick fix game. |

Yeah, I would guess they are already at least build and a half ahead... One getting ironed out for qa, one where they are perfecting and adding in more of the must be ready by launch features.
I think DUST has gone a very far distance since whenever it was I got involved. It is so easy to forget how much the beta has progressed from the build just after fanfest but before E3. It is like a train that won't slow down. Not for anyone or anything until it reaches it's final destination. Even with the return of hard freezes.
But really I was trying to capture how I feel about the entire experience. Both in game hard freezes and reading the same tired thing on the forums (I will translate one of the attitudes that really bothers me as "Console players are too dumb and lazy to want to play an interesting game.") and every time I read that here I think, "FFS, this horse puckey again?"
The beta craps out and so I jump on the forums only to read the same tired arguments and nay saying and so on for the 100th time and it's like Groundhog day or something every time I have to reset my PS3.
Except for the fact that there haven't been any auto aim threads, or complaints about heavies recently...
Anyways, Beta tester blues mostly down to me, and after reading about Dark Souls on PC got inspired about great innovative game making again. |

Ha, nice.
And then it hit me. What if I am turning into my merc from too much beta testing? I mean, think about it, re-awaken in a new body, gear up, run into battle, get killed, gear up again, get killed, over and over... |

I agree. I like games that don't insult my intelligence. I love Dark Souls in particular. |

When you start to feel bored you should think about the versatility of your character. Why not make a sniper build and make use of the skills you already have in light weapons? You would just need the weapon skill. Or try the LAV or HAV path. Some people might say this would clog your character. But those are the ones that always sit in their tanks all day or lurk the mountainsides for the entire game. Actually there are tons of roles you can try out. Why not change your Assault to a more supportive role by adding some more points into nanocircuitry and placing more hives for your team? Or get a syringe and revive? In the end this will help you understand the working of the other roles much better. |

So do I <-------
On this note the best thing about Dust so far is the obvious promise of depth and complexity. I love EVE even though its not a game for me. How unique and complex the game is, is something I can't not appreciate. So now when I look at the half implemented skills tree and see all the things my merc can't do yet I'm excited. Excited to have a game for me with the same depth and complexity as EVE. |
