I can only use militia vehicles, but I've read people do armor tanking in those vehicles. How? I'm not the greatest at vehicles lol |

I'm no tank pilot, but I think some of the things you need for an effective tank are non militia plates followed by non militia to mid range armor resists. I think the armor resists are the more important.

Honestly, I'm dead serious. Sica's are garbage.
If you want a militia soma fit - rail, mt-1x2, dcu, armor resits, 2 reps, plate. Figuring out what size plate and reps combo works best for you is a personal choice. Start with 120 and two smalls. |

Noc knows what the hell he's talking about, don't take him lightly.
And yeah, all armor tanks are fit in a very similar manner...and the Sica is garbage. Active tank with small buffer and resists is really the way to do it. Other than that, max out all armor related skills....really nothing secret about it. |

Nice. you just insulted the best armor tanker, maybe even the best tank driver in the game. Considering he's one of the 20 people with the high end tanks, I wouldn't have said that. |

you have two choices. one is to have one local armor rep one plating of some kind and one resistance mod of some kind. The other is to have either one plate and two resistance mods or two plates and one resistance mod. Both use as good a damage control as you can manage.
The difference between them is that the first will strike then pull back in semi quick back and forth doing light strikes and repairing when the time comes to flee. This is the more tactical and complicated fit and my preferred style of play, but its also the lighter of the two in EHP so it can be ambushed easier.
The Second has no local rep and as such can't preform mid combat healing, but it has mich higher EHP so its harder to take by surprise. If you use this fit you will need to be in a suit with a repair hand tool of some kind. You will be going out and hitting the lines hard because you have the EHP to slug it out for a while and will likely be fighting for a more sustained period. This also means that they will have time to muster a fair amount of AV so you need to get a feel for when you've been worn down enough or when the hammers going to fall and pull back out of the line of fire. At this point you need to either use your repair tool to fix your tank, and you'll be getting 60ish Wp every rep cycle if your commander put a defend order on it, or park at a supply depot or perhaps both. the repairs to your tank will likely take some time so you will be stuck in one place and possibly open to sniper fire until you are ready for battle. This assumes that when you get out someone like your gunners don't just take the driver's seat. If you are rolling with someone with significant remote repair like a remote repair vehicle mod or the rest of your squad with hand tools this is the preferred build for a militia tank because it can now fight at a level similar to a full 5 slot tank because of the near constant repairs it will get while fighting. |

Noc kinda deserved that insult. :P
Noc's first response pretty much boiled down to: "Don't do what you're doing right now"
Knuckle: The general tanking concepts in this game are pretty similar to the ones in other games. For a solo tank, you have health points (armor EHP), damage resists and self-heals (local-reps). The same ideas apply here:
- You want the best local-reps you can manage.
- You want enough EHP to keep you alive until your local-reps kick in.
Damage resists help both goals, so get lots of that. Due to the way unusual way this game handles resist stacking, you'll usually want at least 2 but no more than 3 resistance modules (depending on free slots).
From here, Noc's second post really covers the specifics on how to balance out your tanking goals:
Noc Tempre wrote:If you want a militia soma fit - rail, mt-1x2, dcu, armor resits, 2 reps, plate. Figuring out what size plate and reps combo works best for you is a personal choice. Start with 120 and two smalls. The EVE-acronyms loosely translated come out to: rail - railguns for the driver mt-1x2 - missiles for your gunners dcu - fit a damage control unit 2 reps - fit 2 repair modules plate - fit 1 plate armor resists - fill your remaining slots with these, hopefully 2-3 if you have the slots
As Noc mentions, the reps and plates come in a variety of sizes and have varying CPU/PG requirements. Figuring out whether to get a better plate or to get better reps is up to personal preference.
Personally, I prefer to go heavier on EHP and go weaker on reps. It lets me take a bigger beating during a single fight, but it means I have to sit out longer inbetween fights as my reps wont heal me to full in a single cycle. This also leaves me vulnerable for longer while I'm hiding behind a hill licking my wounds, which means I need to be sure my team is nearby to stop that enemy tank or forge gunner from simply following me. |

In general you need to fit as much resists and plates as possible with or without a repper, there's no other secret to it. Then you just grind to a marauder and the best modules you can squeeze in a tank and that's it.
If this was a certain other game your fit might look like:
