I've noticed that for whatever reason, corps/clans/whatever are starting to appear in matches(even though from my understanding true grouping hasn't been fully implemented yet.) Obviously it's very frustrating and unfair to be stuck on a team of random players pit up against one full of vetted players and a unified strategy. But what if you don't have a lot of experience in First Person Shooters, or lack connections to powerful organizations, or you're just not good enough to find a decent position? What if you don't want to deal with the mess that is clan politics or the overhead of having to dedicate X amount of time every day to DUST when it doesn't exactly sit high on your priority list? What if, god forbid, you enjoy "CoD style" gameplay where you can just jump into a game and shoot people in the face without having to worry about meta-strategy and team mechanics or whatever else?
That's right, I'm talking about "casual" players. Think what you want, DUST will be a better game, and make more money, if it can cater to BOTH "hardcore" and "casual" players.
So here is my proposal:
-Contractors put out two types of contracts to DUST mercs, Corporation Contracts and Open Contracts
-Corporation Contracts are higher profile, more detailed contracts that deal exclusively with corporations.
-Open Contracts are lower profile, simpler contracts that are open to players regardless of corp. affiliation.
-For Open contracts, the contractor can assign a numerical value, akin to the "security rating" in EVE systems
-Each player has a security rating based on a combination of the skills they've learned and their current k/d ratio(and maybe some other parameters, I haven't quite puzzled this part out yet).
-Mercs are either signed automatically to contracts as part of their corporation duties, or can choose to join any Open Contract as long as their personal "security rating" falls within the range stipulated in the contract.
-Corporation Contracts generally have special and/or better rewards than Open Contracts, to discourage Corporations from signing Open Contracts
This creates a dual-segregation system -- firstly, skilled veteran players will only be able to join Open Contracts with a high "security rating" and will probably belong to the more elite, exclusive corps, whereas novice players would have their own semi-level playing field. Secondly, a contractor probably wouldn't put out an Open Contract against a Corporation Contract unless they could ensure through a very high security rating/reward that their team would have the best freelancers. This would mean that all but the most exclusive matches would be Corp vs Corp or Open vs Open. Individual mercs, however, would have the freedom to play both Open Contracts and Corporation Contracts at their discretion.
Lastly, all Open Contracts would be considered "public," that is, corporations would be free to watch matches to headhunt, or find new potential recruits. The cost of an Open Contract would partially be covered by "subscription fees" paid by Corporations in order to have access to these battle feeds(the corps wouldn't pay an individual fee for each match they watched, rather, they'd pay one fee to have access to all feeds, or if you want to complicate it a little bit, pay different amounts for different tiers of access). Additionally, this would further discourage Open vs Corporation matches because Corporations would not want their competitors to be able to freely view and analyze their tactics.
Anyways, just throwing that idea out there. It's still kind of rough, and I welcome constructive criticism. Also, excuse me but I couldn't be assed to sit though 20 hours of EVE fanfests to get an idea of where CCP is going with this, so if I've pretty much outlined what's already going to happen, whatever. |

Well thought out. Good post. I hope CCP takes it to heart as they start working toward more corporate involvment. |

I like the way you are thinking about this. The ability to spectate battle feeds for head hunting is really interesting. To expand on this line of thought you could have matches that are only open to the starter corps (the current corps we are in that are NPC created). This would help to prevent well organized player corps from farming pubbies that aren't as well organized.
I think the pros and cons to potentially roping off part of the game to experienced players needs to be vetted though. While this could allow new players to stretch their legs and get hooked on the game you don't won't to created situation where you are dividing up your community too much. Your battle feeds idea has the potential to prevent this division, but I wonder about the server issues of having a lot of people trying to spectate matches and its effect on latency etc.
CCP and GMs can we please move this to Feedback? PRETTY PLEASE with sugar on top? |

That's the thing though -- the way things are right now, the community is already going to get very divided. The only possible difference is that if things keep going the way they are, the less hardcore players may just leave altogether. Of course, I originally had it set up where players with a lower rating could still join high-rated battles if they felt like they were good enough or whatever; I'm not really sure why I decided to change that lol.
As for latency issues, the video could be delayed or even released only after the match was done. For sure CCP would have to haul ass to get something like that working, but it would benefit the game TREMENDOUSLY, both to induct new players and to make strategy formulation an easier process. Part of what shapes my thinking is the idea that in order for a system to truly become robust and complex, the mechanics have to be fully exposed and the interface simple and intuitive -- sure we could stumble in the dark all day just trying to come up with new strategies from nothing, but enabling something like this would increase formulation speed exponentially -- it's like the difference between a society pre- and post- printing press.

More options is always a good thing.
As you said, not everyone wants to be forced into the same role, group or play style. |

This just in: teamwork is OP. You don't like it, get on a mic and start working with people. More seriously, I understand you want the equivalent of the no-group server in *other popular FPS* so it becomes a crapshoot for both sides. I don't see a problem with this as long as those are the worst paying contracts in the game by a significant margin. No grinding in the kiddie pool. |

Seriously? If anything, the "kiddie pool" is being in a corporation. The reason it's frustrating playing against a clan is because they don't even have to have complex or robust strategies -- the simplest "spam tanks, there's some guys at A" will get the job done.
To be totally fair, skill and challenge have little to do with being in a corporation or not -- there are good and bad corps just like there are good and bad players(although generally a mediocre corp will defeat an unorganized group of fairly skilled players). This insular mentality of insisting there is one "right" way to play the game, however, is going to prevent DUST from becoming anything greater than a generic clusterf**k of an FPS, without even the tighter shooting mechanics and balance that other pure shooters have.
Anyway, maybe you misread my intent, but even Open Contracts(the "no-group server" you refer to) would have an organizational structure -- think of them as ad-hoc corporations, formed for a contract or two and then disbanded. The typical clan/guild/corporation/whatever mentality of online games is tiresome; DUST needs to distinguish itself not only by providing the integrated EVE experience and additional game modes, but also in the ways that you interact with other players. It and the proposed headhunting system make for a more dynamic world that not only eases in fledgling players of all backgrounds, but also makes for a more flexible, less dogmatic high-level game that is more engaging, and perhaps more importantly, truer to the notion of a wild, lawless New Eden. |
