For the life of me flying that damn thing is a nightmare. Now I'm pretty dedicated to logistics, and I'd like to be able to pop out a dropship, but once I lift off the ground, it's a he'll of a ride. Usually ending in me crashing into something. How do you drive straight and turn? It'd be nice to be able to get some practice, but they are expensive, and people firing at you doesn't help either. |

I've decided the best way to practice flying Dropships, is to wait until they fix them. It's been working beautifully for me, personally. |

Anyone can pop out a Dropship for 150k ISK. Flying them is practise. In bf3 my buddy used to join empty games to practise. Once you have a corp which can fight itself for practise you'll have plenty of time to get to grips with it. |

And get 50-70k for the match, since they can't earn any SP or get any kills. This of course is assuming you're playing with people who've never seen a swarm launcher before.
Dropships aren't worth the cost. At all.
What so ever.

When flying a dropship consider that you are basically flying an air-hockey puck. You have NO fixed wing or helicopter rotor to use to "bite" into the air to pull yourself around in a turn. If you are a real pilot or a sim pilot you will need to break yourself of this habit first before you can be successful. I lost several birds before I figured it out. If you are diving at the ground you can't just pull up and translate all that forward momentum into altitude. You can only stop yourself with direct thrust.
Think of it as controlled skidding. Tilt forward with the Left stick, you start pushing yourself forward. Yaw around with the Right stick and you will still be going in that same direction, only backwards now. Basically you are on ice, but you can go up and down as well just to complicate things. The old space wars arcade video game did that in 2D.
So you can push yourself from the front or back or from the left or right side by pushing the Left stick forward or back, or left or right (standard controls). The Right stick left and right pivots the ship in place. Forward and back will move the view camera over or behind the ship in third person view. That won't affect the ship, so don't get confused and try to fly by moving the camera.
Now to complicate things, as you vector your thrust partially to the side what you gain in sideways lift you loose in vertical lift, since total thrust doesn't change. Thus you will sink in proportion to the degree of tilt, though you can compensate for this by goosing the throttle (just not too much, please).
I found it best to find a nice big platform to practice hovering over and landing on. The big crane platform in one of the skirmish maps is ideal as it is also out of the way. It's annoying to have to worry about SL's when you are in basic flight training. At $150k ISK a pop, flight training is already expensive enough.
Start your training low and slow and keep your control inputs small. Pilot induced oscillations will get you killed quickly. If you get into trouble on a landing just abort and try again. Boost up and back off, then come at it a second time. Eventually you will be able to yaw the ship, side slip, and plant it right on the spot pointing in the direction you want. Then take your ship to the top of one of the smaller towers and practice there. It's tougher because you are near the ships ceiling and won't have a lot of power left to correct with. When you are nearly in place you reduce your throttle and settle in. You can even mash L2 and plant it hard if you want to make a quick combat landing. You will loose some shield, but it will regenerate pretty quc
After you are decent at that, practice hoping from one tower to the next. |

I consider this a great time to train the player skill of flying as you won't loose that after the next character skill reset. Eventually people will skill up to stronger ships that will be useful to the team. People who take the time to learn to pilot will be in demand at that time. If you are interested you should learn now while it's still cheap.
Even now taking a full squad to a distant capture point very fast would be quite useful. |
