This is my experience with Dropships and how they annoy the f*ck out of me.
Dropships have become worse than any Tank I've ever faced in an Ambush match. A Tank situation can be fixed if you have the right gear for it which I do and usually a lil back never hurts. But Dropships are the cheapest things in this game currently imo. Cuz once that thing takes off, good luck bringing it down. They usually sit at the top of buildings and spam rockets at you but now they've become more annoying.
My recent match of Ambush consisted of an enemy team piloting a Dropship and bringing down something fierce down on us. While 5 members of my team, including me use our Swarm Launchers (Not Militia) to bring them down but all was for naught. Not even a single rocket hit them, not saying that our Swarm Launchers were weak but that our Swarm Launchers didn't even hit them.
They circled around us non-stop while shooting at everyone and every Swarm Launcher Rocket that we threw at it literally gave up after 5 seconds. I watched on my overview map our rockets were dying after following the Dropship for a few seconds. The Dropship was moving almost twice as fast as our rockets and thus continued it's bombardment on us as everyone on my team tried to bring it down. I for one gave up right after some sniper shot me in the head as I was locking on. I then continued to spawn in my Militia Gear so I could atleast get something out of this match when it ends.
I enjoyed 8,000+ SP and 48,000 ISK while the guy rocking the Dropship probably got 70,000+ SP and 100,000+ ISK with 21-0 Kills.

Really? I think its the other way around. I can lock on and take down any dropship I have a clear view of in at most two volleys. That's one swarm launcher, might have to reload once. And the swarm launchers amazing ability to lock on from all the way across the map makes dropships useless in my opinion. Just a waist of isk. I think ccp needs to make swarm missiles run out of fuel or stop heat seeking after a while so its actually possible to avoid them in a dropship. How are 5 people with swarm launchers missing? |

i think there is a difference between a good pilot and a bad pilot which explain both of your different expereince with them. |

Because of the way that missiles track, it's possible to fly a dropship in an elliptical pattern and avoid missiles forever. This is exactly the same as it was in the previous build.
The best way to shoot down a dropship that's evading swam fire is with a forge gun or heavy railgun from a tank as their projectile speed makes it somewhat easy to hit a fast-moving target without much lead. |

When the pilots get their sp back and get a feel for how to drive a dropship, then you will see many of them outrunning/avoiding swarms. In the last build, I could only get them buy suprising them or finding a spot in their normal path where I could get an angle to shoot at them while they were comming towards me (a bit of luck plays a part with timing it). Even though it was very hard for a forge gun to shoot them while moving, sometimes I would switch to it inorder to get them. However, the forge has had its range limited, so thats not an option.
However, I don't think they will be making the missles go faster or slowing down the dropships anytime soon because I think it was intended to be this way. Take a look...

I have a $600000 dropship and i spent everything I had to get this far and let me tell you it is no fun in the park. while it is possible to outrun missiles (good pilot) its another thing staying productive at the same time, my gunners (when people aren't to scared to get in) are not getting the shots they need when im zooming between buildings and behind rocks or flying into space.

I'm a dropship pilot and had this baby for over 10 matchs and 6 tanks kills so I'm kinda proud of her.
First no we cant outrun your swarms (not check this with nanofiber fit) but we can dodge em with a sharp bank or dive if we time it just right. That only works about 30% of the time with my flying skills and thats if one of my gunners has spotted em and warned me which I would say only happens 50% of the time.
We can get ontop of towers tho and well you just gota get your own dropship and come get us I guess.
Now I got hit by a proto swarm one game and that left me shaking in fear behind a hill for the rest of the match. It thu me upsidedown and had me burning and considering I'm a shield tank with maxed out mods on on it was not cool.
That dropship costs around 0.5 mil and that one guy that bothered to train in swarms nearly ended me and both my gunners , if it wanst for the logistic brosef I had with me I would have had to watch as it slowly burn to ash.
Can also say that I no longer fear forge guns which is nice

Just before the reset when everyone still had alot of sp/isk in this build, I did see one person doing a huge circle flight path where swarms would follow him for 15-20 seconds, but never hit him.... Not so much outrunning as just matching the same speed. I'm not a pilot so I have no clue how he did it, but it was probably a nano and gimped in other ways to just have all the speed they could. Ofcourse they could of done a patch to it since then because I haven't personally seen any do that since, but its still early in the game. |

But its impossible to fly a elliptical pattern with the new physics. They should add flares or let them fly just a certain time. |
