There's only going to be terrain maps for now, we won't be battling on every planet to start with, only what they called tempered planets.
Later on though, there's good chances of space climate planets, moons, ice lava and lava based planets, etc. Dust 514 is more like a MMO then a shooter in that aspect. They'll keel adding to the game as it goes on, not just map looks but type, environment and more. |

Basically being limited to temperate planets is due to the tech limitations of the PS3. The PS3 doesn't have the memory for all the required textures for more planet types. |

Take a look at some of the maps on kz3 or even the ratchet and clank future games. They both have a diverse array of areas |

Wait what??? ok I have to ask, how did you even come up with this theory? Is this the first game you have ever played on a ps3?
Seriously though I think the real limitation has been time. The Devs can only do so much within a certain period of time, and they have so much other stuff to work on that the minor stuff like different world types has been pushed back. |

Memory, ie ram, not hard drives. There are only so many bites available for labeling the textures and the PS3 isn't a herald for having tons of ram |

they did the temperate planets first because they are the most numerous planets in new eden at around 4500 so that way they would only have to make the universal terrain generator be able to do the temperate planets and set it for where on each planet would x-type of scenery be expected.
its not because of a week system its to save time so that they dont have to go and individually create a map 12-20 times on each of the 4500 planets. |

Ram only needs to hold whats relevant to the current map, the number of files being ram limited is rather silly, like you can't have more mp3 on a mp3 player because the album title takes two much space. It will make longer downloads and take more harddrive space and maybe loadtimes. Having more map types files on harddrive won't take more ram then having killzone, cod, and battlefield on same playstation. It doesn't load the battlefield textures to ram when playing killzone as it knows it won't need them. Dust won't tell the playstation to load the ice world to ram when on a lava world map as it knows it won't need it. |

There are hundreds of ocean planets. Look here. It lists numbers of planet of each type per region. Paragon Soul has 12.
All online EVE map resources work for DUST, since they're in the same universe and running on the same server cluster. After release, DUST specific stuff will probably be added as well. |
