So, after playing Dust for awhile, pretty much everything is just as amazing as I had expected out of the Beta. My only problem so far with anything is as the subject says...what the heck happened to the color? The maps for the most part seem like they used color as the planet's first defense. :P Of course I sort of expected a sort of dark theme out of the game, but there is white light on the planet right? Everything just looks sort of...grey. The result sort of gives the game a very old feel to it. The graphics I would say are actually fairly good, but the colors/lighting, or lack thereof, give it an overall feeling of a game made in 2006. :P
So, bearing in mind that the game is still in Beta, what's going on here? Have the maps just not been totally finished, or is this sort of about what we should expect from all the maps? If they aren't still in progress, anybody else feeling the same way?
Any input is welcome! :) |

The tones have definitely improved over the last build and there have been some variations, but I fear that "cold blue/grey steel" will be the dominant pallet.
My friends and I have dubbed some of the variations and you may have noticed them your self....
Occasionally you get the really sunny map...it has a very yellowish tone and we call it a "day at the beach"
Sometimes there is an intense grey windy tone....a typical "sandstorm"
There are times that you are shrouded in a distinct red tone with the same windy effect...this is when you are "fighting on Mars" or playing on the "original Total Recall" map.
Finally there is a very dark map...there is debate among us whether this is "dusk or night" (you will notice the LAV headlights shine on the terrain) or because the sun is still visible in the sky if is in fact an impending "storm front"
Anyway, it is nice to get some change and I presume there is more in the works for future builds :) |

Sometimes you get the map with grass. But yeah, the game is very heavy on the browns and greys. Reviewers won't be very kind to it if it doesn't green-up a little more by the end. There is no shortage of games which are predominately grey and brown. |

The good thing, with Dust being Dust, and CCP being CCP, is that we will keep getting new stuff. At release, IIRC we will only be able to fight on terrestrial planets, probably much like the ones we have now. Eventually we will be able to fight on all planets in the EVE universe, Barren planets, Storm, Ice, Plasma, Lava, Oceanic, and Gas Giants (although the last two will probably be fought in facilities, so. Although it would be AWESOME for Oceanic planets to have huge glass domes that you can see the outside from).
Suffice to say that there will be plenty of variety and color when all is said and done. |

Now that you mentioned the color themes, I once got one where the predominant color was red. But it didn't look terribly good, because it looked more like the entire screen (save for the view of the weapon and your hands) was drained of blue and green tones, with only red left. Instead of a landscape that is naturally red, it looked more like the RGB scale gone wrong.
EVE Online has it great in keeping a color scheme, I hope they emulate the method found in the game itself, since I do love my colored map themes. |

I would disagree and say this is a terrible looking game all around I could swear it was a last generation game if I didnt know better. |

It would be nice if a Dev could swing by and confirm or deny that. :D

I really hope so. :) I have quite a few friends from our eve corp that were, and still are, psyched for Dust, but agree that a bit more color would give the game a nicer overall feel. It's my hopes that, as you said, they will get around to it "SoonGäó"
Stile451 wrote:There is a bug currently if you are using an SCART connection you get no colors. I have actual color, simply refering to the lack of brightness and color in most of the maps. :P
Strangerman wrote:I would disagree and say this is a terrible looking game all around I could swear it was a last generation game if I didnt know better. The graphics aren't actually bad at all...now, you can't really compare UE3 to other, newer engines such as Frostbite or CryEngine that were designed with a specific graphical look and powerful machines in mind (though I REALLY wish Dust could run on UE4 instead of UE3...but oh well :P) but all things considered the graphics are fairly decent, especially considering that they aren't finished yet. |
