Basically item level or item tiers how ever it is more familiar to you; some of the rare stuff isnt on the market so to see what tier it would be on you look at that. |

It is just a ranking scale for items. 1 being basic, 4 and 5 being top of the line with higher skills required. Over 5 it is an aurum cost item most likely, and requires less skill to use, sometimes being much better then the meta 5, or sometimes being the same but just less requirements |

Its kind of an all encompassing rating scale designed to attach a comparative "value" to a specific item/weapon etc......
The higher the better. |

Tech level.
Meta 0 is civilian/militia
meta 1 is T1, the basic model
meta 2-4 is named, if it's better than T1 it'll be by a trivial degree, but it'll be specialized such as high performance at the expense of PG/CPU or vice versa
meta5 is T2. Not implemented in DUST
Meta 6 and up is deadspace, faction, and officer gear. High performance, low PG/CPU need, very expensive.
I don't have DUST up so I don't know where prototype/advanced fall on this scale. |

I do not believe the above answers are correct as I think I have seen items at meta 7/8/9
What I actually think it means is total number of levels needed to attain something.
EX: a prototype remote repair tool might take mechanics level 1, repair systems level 3 and remote repair systems level 5...so its meta would be 9 (5+3+1=9)
Although, i have been wrong before. |

That is a good guess, but not really it...
As a coupla' others have mentioned, It's just a way to categorize items of similar stats and/or rarity together. Typically the lower the level the less powerful and more abundant the item is. Using the meta level can help you gauge quickly the relative strength of an item compared to other items in its class and sometimes also tell you how skilled you need to be to use it, but it does not equate to a specific skill level or tree.

It is the relative item level, and it goes up to at least 10. militia is 0, standard ar 1, breach ar 2, highest meta items are found only as salvage with better then proto-stats. |

Currently for weapons: Militia 0 Standard 1-3 Advanced 4-6 Prototype 7-9 Aur items within a category (ex: Standard) are the highest meta of that category (3).
Other item groups like suits are all weird and likely haven't been adjusted yet.
It is a lot more natural progression in power compaired to EvE where meta is classified in groups how they are obtained with poor indication of power. meta 1-4 basic drop loot. meta 5 tech 2 invention. then faction variations, then deadspace variations, then rare officer top tier. This leads to weird items like a Storyline meta 8 Gallente mining laser which is 1cpu better than a meta 0 because it drops off some faction ships in one low level mission. |

Meta level is also just following 'points in power out' formulas as well.
In all regards
Tech 1 Meta 0-4 Tech 2 Meta 5 Meta 6-20 Officer, Pirate, Army, Customized gear.

Meta level:
Quote:The Meta level of an item indicates its quality. The higher the number, the better the item often is.
Tech I items have no Meta level displayed. They are considered to be of base quality.
Tech II items have a Meta level of 5. They are the highest quality items that can be manufactured and sold by players.
Certain faction or other items may have Meta levels higher than 5. Their attributes, however, may not always be better than those of the Tech II variant of the item.
So yes up to 5 is the cheap stuff those can be manufactured, the rest have to be farmed or found and that costs time which equals ISK. Highest level in this game is 10 and those items are vastly superior to anything you can find from the market, for example meta 10 sniper rifle has a dps of 325 compared to ishukone prototype sniper rifle that has only 225 dps. |
