I come from a background of pc shooters and am more familiar with a mouse and keyboard by far, take that into account. The last console shooter game I played with many hours was goldeneye on the n64.
I find myself more and more getting accustomed to the controller, swapping between it and the mouse flawlessly. That's a lie, there's plenty of flaws. But I am getting better. I find I use the controller for "run 'n gun", and swap hand to the mouse for all my mid to long range work, my left hand however is holding the controller in a funky grip, using the right stick to look around faster, with the mouse just being used for my precisely aimed shots.
I also find that if I use the controller AND the mouse to swing the view, it moves faster than either alone, which is... odd.
My playstyle has the unfortunate side effect of turning me into a kind of mobile turret, but I find even my lackluster shooter skills letting me perform with a lot more accuracy over pure controller. In many close firefights, I see my opponent jumping and hopping, the halo jump I have heard it called, and I just calmly blast them midair with my mouse hand, if I can swap to it fast enough, doing footwork with my controller hand.
And sniping.... suffice it to say, I am able to eke out a nice advantage against pure controller players in a sniper battle. I get a lot of kills like this, and I usually suck as a sniper in a pc fps.
The one thing I have not yet tried is a trackball mouse, but turning my view is just too much work with a standard mouse at the moment.
As a final thought, I find myself performing exceedingly well with turrets, stationary or vehicle mounted, with this stile. just using my offhand to talk, and pan view, and the mouse doing work.
Anyone else using this style? |

It definitely takes time to get used to a new control scheme, whether it's a console gamer trying KB+M or a PC gamer trying to learn gamepad controls - but the mouse and keyboard ARE easier to learn than the controller, because most console gamers still have a passing familiarity with keyboard and mouse for other uses, unlike PC gamers who almost never use their cousin's PS3 to surf the internet.
But keep in mind that in DUST, KB+M don't handle the same way most PC FPS games do, so there's still a bit of a learning curve. |
