The thing is you should choose the best weapon for the situation you are in and it always changes. |

An expert's guide to finding the best weapon in DUST 514:
1. Buy a Militia version of each weapon that has a Militia version. They're BPOs, so they won't disappear with each death. 2. Buy one of each Militia suit, and module. 3. Build a whole stack of experimental builds using this gear, combining the different items in unique ways. 4. Try out the different fittings you created in step 3. 5. Decide which worked best for you. 6. Check if any of the non-Militia weapons are going to function similarly enough to your current setup to be worth trying. 7. If the answer to 6 is yes, buy at least 10. If not, skip to 10. 8. Create an appropriate fitting around the new weapon. 9. Test and see if it's better than your current choice by a significant enough margin to justify the added cost. 10. You now have an awesome weapon and fitting. Use it.
Basically, TRY EVERYTHING. You'll find what works best for you. It might not be the same as what works best for me. Ask my girlfriend what the best weapon is, and she'll either tell you it's the Forge Gun or a Sniper Rifle. I'd say Swarm Launcher or Shotgun. Other players will tell you it's one of the Assault Rifles.
Different people perform better with different weapons and different fittings. Nobody can tell you what YOU will do best with unless they know you well. |

You will also have to pick a role and that will dictate the type of weapon you will use. Since sp and isk are back to what I assume is going to be normal, you won't easily be able to train 2 or 3 different weapons, and sp poured into your weapon make a big difference in how well the operate.

As it has always been, a soldier's best weapons are Teamwork, Dicipline, Awareness, and Intelligence.
For hardware, match your play style, or better yet match the target's vulnerability. |

Reason being is that all the weapons in this game suck ass now and the laggy gameplay makes it impossible to tell how good your gun really is. |

This is very true..i did this same process and found my calling..I even used an empty character slot to try different skill sets until i got an idea of what route i need to take
Another tip as far as skill points...Weapon Skills can be upgraded much faster than your dropsuits so at first do that.
Standard Items are just as good as militia items but take up less space in your fittings...
just a few things i know that i knew before i started lol |

As others have tried to explain this is not the kind of game where any 1 weapon is the best. In basic shooters (ala quake (the BFG)) there is a clear progression of weapon power, typically linked to the rarity of the ammo. In this game however a weapon's power is very situation based and one cannot be clearly said to be the best.
For example: Anti-tank - forge/swarm Anti-dropship - swarm AP (close quarters) SMG/scrambler pistol AP (medium range) assault/HMG AP (long) sniper |
