Not completely. The technology does not exist that can take the entire internet soup and make it smooth sailing for everyone. Some players will have horrible connections or just bad ISP options. It isn't gonna be their fault and they will want to play the game. Some players will have amazing connection speeds and live far away from the server a battle is being hosted on. Improvements can be made, but there is no way to even it all out so that everyone has a flawless experience all the time in a game as massive as Dust might prove to be.
Based on what I have seen in Beta so far have a couple thoughts.
I want to play in a single shard living universe world. No instancing or getting segregated onto different servers. That might help with hit detection for some people but seems to go against the spirit of EVE. If I am playing an EVE game I want to pay in an everyone plays with everyone else all the time sort of universe. With the exception of some safe zones just for beginners. Maybe.
WIll we still have battle servers for full release? I would like the location of a battle server to be hidden. Seeing "EU" or "US" on my planet choices sort of breaks the immersion.
What if each zone on a planet or contract was rated so that when you were looking for battles you would get a green zone listing if your ping etc. was decent, yellow for so so, or red, for a terrible connection. I can live with a few choppy games with latency and not so great hit detection if I know what I am getting in to, or it is for the good of the team, etc.
For contested planets, seems like the thing to do would be to distribute the different areas on planets that we can seek to take control of so that they are balanced between server regions. That way if the frozen wastes of a certain region were being hosted on the Asian server and you were with your corp mates from Europe and planning to take over that area, you would know to expect some lag, etc.
But I would be really disappointed if we, the players, were divided up onto a few servers and all played the same versions of different maps. Even if it meant flawless hit detection. |
