As we all know, dropships are drastically different.. and testing / learning this new style is going to take practice to get good at, and to be able to provide constructive feedback. (not just knee-jerk reactions)
So.. here's a way to do so without going completely broke, and be completely useless to your team for the next week or so while doing so. (sorry guys)
Make a dropsuit fit that works with your play style that's completely militia.
Make a vehicle fit with a militia dropship and fit it with everything militia to taste.
My Viper militia fit costs ~150k. My E3 Eryx build (slightly modified) is just under $1 million.
Doing nothing, or at least very little things that are worthwile for the team (sorry again team, no other place to test), I've gotten around 120-140k isk.
So.. test 1 dropship per game, and then when you lose it, run around with dirt cheap/free gear and you should come out about even, if not ahead. For those of us with cash left over, this will help you test once you're done with your stockpile of ships.
And btw, the swarm launcher distance for locking on targets seems to be increased, or perhaps it's just the clipping distance has been reduced.. but people can lock a long way away now.
You might not want to enter combat or take on passengers for a while, especially in your good ships, until you can safely land without crushing your dropship. I blew one up by just landing a bit too hard.
Hope this helps. |

I love the new drop ship controls, it actually take proper skill to fly them now, so we will have dedicated dropship pilots, rather than just a free for all with air mobile gun turrets.
I applaud you sir for being the first of the air jocks |

Thanks man. I'll accept that title once I can fly like I used to, if not better. Still working on that barrel roll, but I did do a backflip and survive. |

Yeah im buying vipers and fitting them with the "idea" of how i want it fit but with the garbage cheap modules, heck im not even fitting a CRU spawn on them. I still feel like dropship pilots can be an essential part of the battlefield even more so now that DS pilots arent a dime a dozen.
Although the new dropship controls arent the only thing thats going to present a challenge to us. I was actually in a DS on a gun and for some reason whenever the ship was moving my gun seemed to get pinned pointing straight back, almost like some sort of inertia effect has been added. Theres also something funny going on with missile turrets on vehicles now. Seems like every third missile or so just seems to go completely randomly out of the barrel. I thought this may of just been an issue with me being in a dropship and it being somewhat jerky but same thing happened to me in a tank that was stationary.
Looking on the bright side though with all these obstacles we probably wont have many people trying to "terk yer jerrrrbs!!" |

From my short experience flying my Eryx around like a flying drunken cow I've realized the trick to how the physics works. I haven't seen anyone else mention it (though it may be obvious) but i find that dropships now handle a lot like you would expect a helicopter to. Once i figured that out i had a much easier time piloting it. I'm still having a hard time getting it to sit still though :\ |

Getting there .. getting a hang of the controls, one thing that bothers me though.... you get stuck in a crossfire of missles and swams, you make it out no problem, hit the shield rechargers, BUT.....
Armour is low enough for the ship to catch fire, now obviously you can't land were the action is to repair, and because now fire does damage, you don't have much time to find a "clear" spot to land and repair in enough time.
You watch that armour go down, down, down, down ... zero, now all thats going down is the ship.
Guess going to have to go armour tank from now on as shield tanking is screwed if armour lost. |

Yeah I'm not a fan of the flames melting the ship for shield tanks, we have so little armor. I wanted flames to go out when shields were at full (sort of extinguishing them, yet keeping armor at where it was)
Back in E3 build, I made a pretty tanky fit with just an armor repper for a Caldari dropship.. it can take a lot of damage, and repair armor, but refilling shields takes a good while.
Considering the boat-like feel of the dropships now, I'm not sure if I'll go armor tanking due to all that mass. :(
Still a lot to be figured out, definitely feel like Dropships got a heavy nerf in ability to outrun missiles and avoid FG fire, but still testing. |
