Its beed suggested that dust have a large toggable overlay grid set up with letters and numbers this would be a great tool for team coordinations but it can also be a valid machanic.
A player could equip a laser targeter/designator that pinpoints atrikes for orbital bombardments airstrikes and artilery, which evers being called in. however for those few people who dont want to equip the laser targeter they could simple enter in the coordinates for the grid. And blast the general area.
Airstikes it would be uses ful if we could call in drone airstikes on a location if drones were avalible, by avalible I mean if a eve ship with drone capacity equips special drones for us to call in for a more precise attack method. Another way drones would be avalible is if the planet has airfields and if our team controls them with gain acces to drone strike abilitys.
Artillery regiments, could be owned by dusties and would be off map but whould provide dusties with alterntive to orbital bombard if the eves who hired cant gain space we wont lose are bombardment capabiltys provide were willing to pay for it. |

Are you talking about a grid overlay that would overlay on the map or in FP mode? I think an overlay in first person mode would be a good idea so someone could quickly call out coordinates.
Drone airstrikes arent a bad idea but might be alittle harder to implement, but maybe a dev could comment on if the tech can sustain that.
Artillery strikes, see with this kind of off map support its easy to explain but harder to justify balance wise. I think it would require some experiments first to see how it affects gameplay and meta gameplay. Easy explanation though, artillery drones. Hell you might even be able to keep them on map.
Not bad suggestions though. |

A grid that overlays the intire map in first person view, I was think a battleship like grid A4 f2 for larger maps AB1 or A14. The grid your in could be displayed right below the radar/minimap thing. But yes a grid that overlays the map at all times and even when looking at the map.
As for drone airstikes they shouldnt be very hard to make have a animation in the sky where they fly over and the marked area/grid is blasted with explosion not as wide spread and complete as bombardment but useful when overkill isnt absolutely nessecary.
As for drone artiliry it could be something a corporation would have to buy costing like 20mil, and would be availble so long as the dust corp wants it deployed. It would mainly be something for us dusties to own and control. So if the eve corp who hired us cant peovide bombardment we would have something else.
There could even be a match mode where the enemys objective is to destroy your artiliry drones. |

Or the planets could just have Lattitude/Longitude coordinates and you could read off in com where to fire or send a mail with the coordinates... |

The grid gives commanders more option like "we got a tank in D5, get some AV guys over here" or "land the dropship in F6, the rest off us get to the ridge and cover F5." Rather than "land at 64 and 21" or "we have a tank at 64 52, no wait 65 53 no wait... Nvm" the grid a little more helpful in the tactical sense. |

A 2d map overlay would work for general infantry movement and orbital strikes that shoot straight down. However you would been to at another dimension (height) for airstrikes, artillary or anything that shoots at an angle and not straight down. This is because if Im standing on a building and you call in a drone to B11 how would it know if it is to shoot at the ground or at the top of the building. Target painting does remove the need for that.
I like the map overlay idea for infantry use and orbital strikes, but may not be practical for angled incoming attacks (artillery). |

I can see Grid movement working for Infantry. But for orbital strikes and artillery bombardments, I'd think Lat/Lon would make more sense.
Who knows how big these grids would be either. |

25 by 25 meters? if your standing in the middle everthing except the outer edge should be close range, and the adjacent grid would be medium range excpet for their outer edge and 3 away would be long. So the orbital strike seen on the fanfest showing would cover the intire grid.
Also if regulars could call out exact coordinates then there be no point for the laser designator. |

Or atleast as pinpoint as a simi sized round can get. The dreadnoughts are shooting simi truck sized rounds at each other. |

I think that artillery needs to be on map so that it is caputrable/destroyable. This would add more depth to the game play than simply saying that the artillery is too far away for us to get to.
If CCP wants to get fancy they would make it possible for artillery to strike other sectors of a planet. This would make both scenarios true, they would be off map some times and on map others. |

I suggested one time if planetary warfare becomes like a RTS for commanders between matchs then artilery location could be attacked by the enemy to destroy/capture them. Somethin like a artilery drone coloum gets jammed and capture or destroy it before it atarts up and roles away is the objective. So a new mode for taking out artiliery.
Forgive apelling did this on my phone |
