I loved proximity chat in MAG, it really gives a whole new level of immersion when you have surround sound and can overhear the enemy planning an attack.
It was also one of my favorite things to run behind an enemy, yelling "yoohoo, behind youuuuu", and then shooting them in the face when they finally realized what's going on. Good times.
Not everything has to make perfect sense in the game world perspective, especially when it's as fun as proximity chat. Besides, it's perfectly possible that even in the future helmets do not mute your voice. |

There are other places to go for that kind of game.
Maybe in the lowest tier noob games? But soon as it because more serious, clan verse clan, empire verse empire, it should probably go off. Otherwise players will be force to use a third party voice comm on a third party system. That would exclude some players from the end game. Which is not good.
There's much more to proximity chat than smack talk, see my other post in this thread.
Many (most?) clans will continue using their Mumble servers no matter what.

That's how it works in MAG: I get environmental sounds, including gun shots and proximity chat via speakers, and teammate voice comms via your headset. With surround sound proximity chat adds a lot, since you can tell where someone is when they speak.
MAG also had extensive stealth mechanics (not cloaking, stealth), but that's another point. |

I'm 37 years old, and I get it. I play FPSs (and games) to have fun. Occasional smack talk is fun for me, and for many other people. Hardcore FPS players are generally extremely competitive, and they often let off steam, build camaraderie, and cultivate rivalries with smack talk.
It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with fragile agos or immaturity. I thought psychoanalysing people went out of fashion in the 90s.
Why is that so hard to understand?
As for the surround sound, you don't need a fancy stereo system for it. Although I haven't tried it, Dolby Stereo (Surround?) supposedly gives very good directional aural cues with decent headphones. |
